Description

1. The vacuoles vanished and the protoplasm drifted away from the cell wall,

forming the organelles to appear clumped in the center of the cell when the Elodea was put in the salt solution. Plasmolysis is a term used to describe cells that have undergone this process. This occurred because there was a higher water potential within the cells than there was in the salt solution. As a consequence, water exited via (primarily) vacuoles and into the salt solution. 2. The salt causes the water to flow from the plant's cells, which are now higher in concentration, to lower ones. As a result of this, cells begin to lose their turgidity and they die. 3. Because a saline solution is not isotonic, it would only enter the cell partially and reach equilibrium. It would flood the cell and cause it to burst if it were pure water. 4. Osmosis is the transfer of water from one region to another. Freshwater creatures' cells have permeable membranes that allow excess water to enter. These vacuoles must eliminate the extra water. There is no additional water entering a salt-water cell because there is no excess....
