Shelby DeGroote Positive-Negative Space Project Reflection

For my project, I used the elements of asymmetry and rule of thirds to create visually unusual compositions with very clear focal points. The goal of this project was to incorporate the theme of empathy into our compositions. I started out wanting to use prostitution as my subject, but when looking for possible images, I found very compelling depictions of rape victims who were being ‘silenced’ by their attacker’s hand. This idea seemed very visually stunning, and I found myself empathizing with the situation from the image I had found. For my ambiguous piece I decided to do a close up of an eye, because from my obvious piece the eye seemed to show all the hurt the girl might be feeling. Negative and positive space is an interesting concept when mixed with the theme of empathy. This is because the whole idea of empathy is understanding how someone else can feel, almost like seeing right through them, like negative space. This idea is shown literally in both of my pieces, where the negative space is the face or the eye, actually seeing through the person. I am pleased with the way both of my compositions turned out, although I will say that my obvious piece is my favorite of the two. They are simple yet complex in detail, and I think my attention to detail adds to the understanding and idea I am trying to portray. I made sure to take care of my paper, not bending or holding it in a damaging way, especially when it was cut out, as it became very delicate due to all of the details. From this project, I sharpened my skill in creating art with an exacto knife, and learned how to think more in depth about creating art that has a deeper meaning than what you can immediately comprehend....
