Introduction/Class Overview Due Wed Oct 27 @ 11:59 pm EDT • 0% weight ASSIGNMENTACTIVITY 100 Introduction/Class Overview

INTRODUCTION Hello, my friend! My name is Shane Saeidi. I am the Course Director for both the campus and online versions of Pre-Calculus (PCAL) and Calculus (CAL) here at Full Sail University. I am also the creator of the online Math Skills Test each of you took which placed you into this suite of preliminary math courses. I am in my 22nd year serving our students here at Full Sail. I am fortunate to have earned the distinction of both the top Math Lab Specialist (2002) and the Award of Excellence (2004) given to our Course Directors. The purpose of this course is to provide our students a space where, together, we can establish a strong math foundation and, ultimately, gain the confidence necessary to succeed in our subsequent math courses such as: Discrete Mathematics, Linear Algebra and Physics, Statistics, and Probability. Confidence, more than content, will dictate your future success here at Full Sail, and beyond. PCAL is the first step on your mathematical journey here at Full Sail University. This is a free, non-credited, self-paced course meant as a refresher before attempting your paidfor, credited courses mentioned above as the skill sets we reinforce in this course have been proven necessary for continued student success such as improved pass rates, retention rates, and, ultimately, higher graduation rates. Having taught math for over 20 years, I often hear, "where am I ever going to use this?" I, too, was a student once. I sat where you sit. I had the same questions you have. You should ask those questions, and you can trust us to know the answers to those questions. Simply put: as a software developer, you will constantly be tasked to independently provide solutions to the problems of our future. The critical-thinking skills and autonomy you develop in solutions-based courses like this have a direct correlation with those logic-based skills you will employ when creating software. After all, software developers are inherently problem solvers who use math and programming as a tool to design and develop various forms of interactive media, and we produce problem-solvers who develop software. Being an online course, we understand that all of your work will be done remotely and online. We also understand that there are a plethora of resources on the internet that you can lean on to provide solutions to nearly all of the problems in our PCAL course. We expect you to use assets as you deem fit, but we also expect you to do all of your own work and to use solutions-generated websites as supplement only. We've designed

our PCAL course to be a buffer, not a filter, and will provide you a framework for success, but that success will only come if you are truly submitting your own work, using online resources only to verify your solutions and to address any issues. PROCEDURES

Before starting class, please purchase a notebook to keep all of your papers together. You are expected to take notes when watching the lecture videos. And, when doing problems, you expected to:   

write down your solutions for every problem write clearly, doing one thing at a time per line, and circle your answers when finished

Also, you do not need us to show us your work for every assignment. You only need to show it when you are working from home and have a particular question for us. The course is comprised of three main activities: lecture videos, exercises (assignments) and self-assessments (quizzes). Course content will be structured such that you can move at your own pace, and there are no late penalties, but we expect you to adhere to the weekly due dates. And there are multiple attempts per exercise and self-assessment. But we expect you to:   

Adhere to the weekly deadlines Do activities in the order they appear on FSO Only click the "submit" button once you are completely finished with the exercise or selfassessment and are ready to move forward to the next activity

Do not skip ahead and take self-assessments until you have completed the previous lesson Do not move forward to other lessons until you have completed the previous lesson and self-assessment

ZOOM MEETINGS

We will have instructors holding weekly Zoom Meetings. THESE ARE OPTIONAL, NOT MANDATORY. Please refer to the Zoom Meeting Schedule activity for a schedule of our availability and summary of your scheduling options. We will also hold one-on-one meetings to work around your busy schedules. Please message us on FSO to set up individual Zoom sessions. MORE PROCEDURES

As we asked earlier, please do the activities in the order they appear each week on FSO (please do not skip ahead). And when reaching out with questions, make sure to:    

Use FSO for all correspondences Tell us the activity and problem number (Lesson 1, Question 2.3, for example) Take a clear, portrait picture of your work (do not turn your camera/phone/tablet/iPad sideways) Drag and drop the images into a message on FSO and send

*** Remember, you are not required to send us your work. You should only send your work if you have a particular question. IMMEDIATE RESCHEDULE REQUIREMENTS

Lastly, because this is a Pass or Fail class that requires an Immediate Reschedule, you MUST have ALL work completed by midnight EST Friday of the 4th week of class. We will lock the grades on FSO @ midnight EST on Friday of Week 4, so please take the initiative and adhere to the push and pull dates outlined on FSO. Thank you for taking the time to read this. We look forward to helping you achieve your goals and will stand beside you, step-by-step, as you work towards those goals. Please click the "mark as completed" button below to confirm you've read this Introduction and to verify you understand our procedures, and to confirm that you are active in the class....
