In Module Four: Performing the Research Investigation (Continued), learning block 4-2 (page 1) and learning block 4-3 (page 3); and Module Five: Tailoring the Message to an Audience, learning block 5-3 (page 3), you completed the following work: Provide a brief overview of the social scientific background of your issue and research question. How is the issue situated within the social sciences? My research question is, are the increase in social anxiety cases among young adults related to increased social media usage? My issue’s focus falls under the umbrellas of sociology and psychology. Humans conceptualize beliefs, behaviors and social norms. Various social roles corelate to expected behaviors that are considered to be social norms. I think that a social scientist would research this topic from present day to the pre-social media era in order to identity and review human behaviors, along with behaviors among groups of people, individuals, and organizations. In Module Five: Tailoring the Message to an Audience, learning block 5-2 (page 3), you completed the following work: II. Explain how the issue impacts the audience. In other words, how is the issue relevant to members of the audience? Why should the audience care about the response to your question or the outcome of your investigation? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. I think that my topic would be an impact to a varied audience. Since my issue is about the mental well being of adolescents, my primary audience would be parents and teachers. These are the people who spend most time around young adults, therefore, being aware of how social media can affect anxiety in them would be beneficial to them. Teenagers would also benefit because my message directly pertains to them. My message is tailored to my audience because social media is used by a majority of society and it has many positive and negative affects on it’s users over a period of time. Among surveyed adolescents, 45% were constantly online and 97%

utilize at least one social media platform. The study revealed a link between the amount of time teens spent on social media along with symptoms of anxiety and depression. (Anderson & Jiang, 2018)

In Module Six: Tailoring the Message to an Audience (Continued), learning block 6-1 (page 4), you contributed to the following prompt: III. Describe the evidence you have to support your conclusions about the impact of the issue on you personally and on your audience. Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. More frequent social media use among teens surveyed was positively associated with more anxiety and depressive symptoms. “Although social media use was not directly related to internalizing symptoms, social media use predicted increased engagement in co-rumination, which in turn predicted increased internalizing symptoms. Specifically, co-rumination was found to mediate the relationship between social media use and anxiety symptoms.” (Ohannessian, 2021). In Module Two: Exploring Social Science Issues (Continued), learning block 2-2 (page 4), you completed the following work: IV. Explain why this issue is important to you personally. In other words, why did you select this issue to investigate? Much of social media induced anxiety is a result of the changes that social media has brought about in interpersonal interactions and communication. This is significant to me because social media affects the lives of everyone and I had a large number of friends and classmates throughout middle and high school who suffered from anxiety. In Module Three: Performing the Research Investigation, learning block 3-4 (page 1), you contributed to the following prompt: V. Illustrate how your investigation of the issue impacted the way you thought about the issue. In other words, how did thinking like a scientist to research and develop a question affect what you thought about the issue you selected? How did social scientific thinking

change the lens through which you viewed the issue? Support your response with specific examples from your research investigation. As I started my research, I was hesitant to believe that the relationship between social media and anxiety is a strong one. This is because I am an avid social media user who has never experienced social anxiety. Reading the results of research by professionals and seeing the statistics of social media induced anxiety changed the lens from which I viewed the issue. Instead of viewing as a social media user who has not experienced anxiety, I viewed through the lens of a social scientific researcher seeking information and data to support my research question. My research revealed to me that social roles come into play as users of social media begin to compare themselves to others on the platforms. These comparisons are usually about physical appearance and material belongings. These comparisons can often lead to feelings of inadequacy leading to mental health issues such as anxiety. (Keles, McCrae & Grealish 2020). In Module Five: Tailoring the Message to an Audience, learning block 5-2 (page 3), learning block 5-3 (page 3), and learning block 6-1 (page 4), you began working on the following section of the prompt: VI. Communicate your message in a way that is tailored to your specific audience. For instance, you could consider your vocabulary, your audience’s potential current natural science knowledge or lack thereof, and what is specifically important to the audience. It is my opinion that what is specifically important to the audience is understanding the message, effective communication and an engaging presentation. Communicating my message in a way that it is tailored to my audience would entail clear communication through a presentation that is easy to follow and understand. This would include visual examples along with a verbal explanation of research results including data, statistics and examples. I believe that this method of delivery would keep my audience engaged, and therefore they would benefit from the information that I present to them.
