Description

Christian Sermos HIS 200: Applied History SNHU March 14, 2021 Desegregation of College Football I. Describe the historical event that you selected. Why is this event significant? The event I decided to study is the desegregation of college football. It did not happen overnight, in fact it took many decades before college sports, specifically football, became racially integrated. This is important because this was a major step in the civil rights movement during this time. I wanted to look at college football in general and highlight some key points during this time. Starting from the first black college football player at USC in the 1920s all the way to the last segregated game between the integrated USC and the all white Alabama team in 1970. There were so many key moments that lead to all of college football changing their ways and allowing African Americans to play the sport they love while pursuing a higher education. II. Describe at least two secondary sources that you could use to research your historical event. I would like to use journal articles discussing and analyzing that time period like “The Rise and Fall of Jim Crow in Southern College Sports: The Case of the Atlantic Coast Conference by Charles H. Martin, written in 1999. I would also like to look at a documentary covering the famous USC vs Alabama game in 1970 called “Turning The Tide”. It goes in depth covering the game with interviews and behind the scenes info that was never seen before.

III. Based on your review of primary and secondary sources, develop a research question related

to the historical event you selected. In other words, what would you like to know more about? I would like to know more about how athletes were treated at these integrated schools. What were their experiences like during this time and did they get better or worse treatment than white athletes. Also, integrated programs were winning a lot more than their segregated counterparts, did winning play a part in programs changing their views and mindsets?...
