School Desegregation in Boston The topic that I have chosen for this project is the desegregation in the Boston school systems. In 1974, W. Arthur Garrity made the Boston public schools start busing the students to other schools in order to create a racial desegregation school system. This was significant at the time because of the racial protests and riots that occurred because of the judge’s decision. Due to the call for desegregation, Boston politics were affected, and it contributed to the demographic shifts of school aged population which lead to a decline in public school enrolment and white students moving out to the suburbs. The research question(s) that I have thought of was Boston the first city to implement a desegregation of students or had other cities lead the way? I also would like to know more about the accommodations for the students that now had longer bus rides to and from school such as were their max travel times for how far a student would have to travel?...
