Description

SAS Institute Invests in Employees SAS Institute Inc. is the world’s largest privately held software company. SAS Institute is ranked number 1 on Fortune’s 2010 list of the “Best Companies to Work For” (Carpenter et al., 2010). SAS is the best company to work for because “the company is quick to attribute their success to the performance and loyalty of their workforce” (Carpenter et al., 2010). But how SAS employees stay loyal and keep working with high-performance? Basically, “SAS has perfected the art of employee management” (Carpenter et al., 2010). I agree with SAS’s employee management approach by implementing the four factors that have the strongest influence over work behaviors, which are job performance, organizational citizenship, absenteeism, and turnover (Carpenter et al., 2010). Job performance refers to the level to which an employee successfully fulfills the factors included in the job description (Carpenter et al., 2010). Job performance is critical and takes into account the impact of the general mental capacity of the person. Treatment at work is one of the factors that affect performance; workers care about the employer’s biases towards other employees. The stress level, job attitude, and personality of employees play an important role in the performance of the job. By writing a management strategy, SAS CEO Jim Goodnight tackled the issues of work efficiency. According to (Carpenter et al., 2010), SAS’s management approach eliminated barriers and gave staff the ability to work on exciting and challenging projects. The personalities and factors, including workplace treatment, positive attitudes to work, and the employee's age, are part of organizational citizenship (Carpenter et

al, 2020). The role of personality in citizenship is crucial. According to (Carpenter et al., 2010), the big five personality traits are openness, conscientiousness, extraversion, agreeableness, and neuroticism. Goodnight managed to gain citizenship because he believed that the new ideas of his employees worked for his company and he strongly respected them (Crowley, 2013). In the background of the 2008 Great Recession, Goodnight eased his 13,000 global workers by ensuring that they would not risk their jobs (Crowley, 2013). That’s why the employees felt their SAS contribution was significant. When the idea of no layoffs is being discussed, it seems that consideration is a factor for people of all ages who find a job difficultly. According to (Carpenter et al., 2010), Poor performance, negative jobs, stress, personality, or the age of an employee can contribute to turnover. Goodnight's management philosophy for dealing with turnovers is to respect people above all else and give them benefits. SAS has less than 3% of the turnover percentage compared with an industry with an average of 22% (Crowley, 2013). Concerning productivity loss, (Crowley, 2013) said that instead, the funds were used to further boost “the work-life experience of employees”. In conclusion, I agree that (Carpenter et al., 2020) four "factors with the highest effect on work behavior" must be included in companies like SAS, which include job performance, organizational citizenship, absenteeism, and turnover to remain successful and achieve their goals. I agree with all policies that SAS CEO Jim Goodnight is following because he looked after his employees, which have a great effect on the performance of his employees. The art of management and his methods contributed to more active and happy employees and family life-enriching.
