Cicero, Pro Murena – Translation Our ones however – for I will tell, Cato, that even I asked for a help from doctrine, diffident in my intelligence, when I was young – our ones, I say, from Plato and Aristotle, calm and temperate men, affirm that grace near a wise man is worth at some time, that good men have compassion, that the punishment of crimes and inequality are of different kind that the place of knowledge is near the constant man, that the wise man often gives opinion about something that he doesn’t know, that he sometimes gets angry, that the same rises up and calms down, that sometimes he changes what he said, if it’s more correct, and sometimes he retreats his sentence; that every virtue is moderated by a certain mean. If you had the fortune to meet those teachers, Cato, after that this nature was brought down, you surely would be neither a better man nor more powerful nor more temperate nor more just – nor you could be so – but a little more inclined to kindness. You wouldn’t accuse, led by any hos tility, provoked by any insult, a very respectable man provided with honesty and great dignity. After that the fortune had put you and Murena under the protection of the same year, you would consider to be linked to the state with this man by the same bound. You wouldn’t have told or, if you could have, you would have rendered, at least in part, in a more temper ate way what you angrily said in the senate. And as much as I wish, the practice will bend, the day will calm and the year will mitigate you burning for the recent studies of the teachers, shaken by that kind of force of the soul and raised up by the force of your nature and intelligence.
