Expected Pharmacological Action To block basal and stimulated acid production and reduce gastric acid secretions by inhibiting the enzyme that produces gastric acid
Therapeutic Use -Short-term therapy for gastric & duodenal ulcers, erosive esophagitis, & GERD. -Long-term therapy for hypersecretory conditions. -Prevention of stress ulcers.

Interactions
-Assess for epigastric or abdominal pain -Monitor Bowel Function -Report diarrhea, abdominal cramping, fever, & bloody stools -Administer before meals -preferably in AM -Do not crush capsule
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Decrease in abdominal pain and/or gastric irritation -Healing of duodenal ulcers (seen on x-ray or endoscopy) -Decreased symptoms of GERD -Decreased symptoms of erosive esophagitis
