Expected Pharmacological Action This medication is used to treat gout and hyperuricemia.
Therapeutic Use Antigout
Complications Headache, peripheral neuropathy, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dysphagia, and paresthesia.
Medication Administration Adult: tabs- 100mg & 300mg injection-various.
Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivity to allopurinol or its components. Nursing Interventions
Interactions
-Obtain CBC and uric acid level. -Monitor for signs of allergic reaction (skin rash). -Monitor fluid intake. -Asses patients extremities and joints for pain and redness.
Ace inhibitors, chlorpropamide, cyclophosphamide, dicumarol, thiazidine diuretics, and uricosuric agents.
Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness -Normal serum and uric acid levels. -Decrease in pain and inflammation.
