Expected Pharmacological Action Allopurinol is in a class of medications called xanthine oxidase inhibitors. It works by reducing the production of uric acid in the body. High levels of uric acid may cause gout attacks or kidney stones. Allopurinol is used to prevent gout attacks, not to treat them once they occur.

Therapeutic Use Allopurinol is a medicine used to lower levels of uric acid in your blood. If you produce too much uric acid or your kidneys do not filter enough out, it can build up and cause tiny, sharp crystals to form in and around your joints. Allopurinol is used to treat gout and kidney stones.

Medication Administration Allopurinol comes as a tablet to take by mouth. It is usually taken once or twice a day, preferably after a meal. To help you remember to take allopurinol, take it around the same time every day.

Contraindications/Precautions Hypersensitivty to allopurinol This medication contains allopurinol. Do not take Zyloprim or Aloprim if you are allergic to allopurinol or any ingredients contains in this drug. Keep out of reach of children. In case of overdose, get medical help or contact poison control center immediately.

Interactions If your medical doctor is using this medicine to trat your pain, your doctor or pharmacist may already be aware pf any possible drug interactions and may be monitoring you for them. Do not start, stop, or change the dosage of any meicine before checking with your Doctor. Allopurinol has no known severe interactions with any drugs.

Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Allopurinol is very effective at reducing uric acid levels. Complete blood count, liver function tests, renal function, and serum uric acid levels shall be measured every 2 to 5 weeks while titrating the dose until achieving target serum uric acid level and every six months after that.

Nursing Interventions Discontinue at first sign of allergic reactions, first sign of rash, inflammation of blood vessels, or Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Liver damage (hepatotoxicity) reported (reversible). Use with caution in renal impairment. Maintain fluid intake necessary to yield urine output of at least 2 liters per day in adults. When taking with amoxicillin or ampicillin, may increase risk of skin rash.

Client Education Take each dose with a full glass of water. To reduce your risk of kidney stones forming, drink 8 to 10 full glasses of fluid every day, unless your doctor tells you otherwise. Take with food if allopurinol upsets your stomach. You may have gout attacks more often when you first start taking allopurinol....
