PSYCH 665 SERIAL KILLERS PRESENTATION SLIDES AND NOTES WEEK 6 Introduction The following presentation is one that will cover serial killers and how they may be affected by mental illness and possible drug/alcohol addiction. On the following slides it will cover the abstract, literature review, purpose, methods and expected conclusions. Abstract 

Motivation

Mental Illness

Drug Use

Alcohol Use

When we talk about motivation it comes to mind on what could possibly cause these people to become serial killers in the first place. Then the questions come about on do drugs and alcohol play a part into the serial killers mental illness and what else could possibly motivate them. Literature Review 

Many Sides of Ted Bundy

Traits and Thrills

In the literature reviews that were done for this research proposal one of them was about the famous Ted Bundy who raped and murdered no telling how many women. It is said that all of the women looked very similar to his own mother. This was an interesting factor into what may have been behind the motivation of his serial killings that he committed (Ramsland, 2013). There were definitely some mental illness that was underlying with him although it is not known if there were drugs or alcohol that were involved. As for Traits and Thrills this gave a great insight on how a serial killer is motivated and it is concluded that it has a lot to do with the environment for which they grew up in. Also what played a great role in the serial killers lives where their personality traits that they had (Simon, 2015). 

Serial Killers I

Serial Killer II

For both the Serial Killers I and II these articles showed how there seems to be a pattern that is involved with a serial killer and they follow the same pattern with each person that they kill (Miller, 2014). More in the Serial Killer II article it shared information on how one that is a serial killer who has a mental illness seems to use alcohol or drugs in order to try and self medicate themselves (Miller, 2014). Purpose 

Hypothesis›

People who use substances and alcohol abuse while being diagnosed with a mental illness have higher rates of becoming a serial killer.

The entire purpose of this research proposal was to see if the people who are using substances and abuse alcohol while they are diagnosed with a mental illness if they seem to be at a higher rate of becoming a serial killer. Methods 

Samples 

Ted Bundy

Son of Sam

Charles Manson

The method that was used was that of samples. The samples that were used for this method were Ted Bundy, Son of Sam and, Charles Manson. Ted Bundy was actually raised by his grandparents and never knew his father. The grandparents took care of him due to the fact that they did not want shame brought upon their daughter who gave birth out of wedlock. He was very intelligent and had a good education and even went to college. He was sentenced to death. The second sample was Charles Manson who was a serial killer but only actually committed a few of the murders himself. This man had followers that he had kill for him. He also grew up with no father and his mother had him at a very young age. He had a mental illness and used all types of different drugs in order to try and self medicate. He ended up dying in a prison as his parole was continuously denied. The third sample was the Son of Sam whose actual name was David Berkowitz. He was born to his mother but later was given up for adoption and was raised by his adoptive parents. He was schizophrenic and took many different types of drugs in order to try and self medicate himself. He told people that he heard voices that told him to kill people and even at one point stated that a dog would talk to him. He was also sentenced to life in prison.

Expected Conclusions 

Ethical Considerations

Motivation

Environmental Factors

In order to not have as many ethical considerations it was taken from a smaller sample size. All of the serial killers that were in this research proposal had some sort of mental illness and took drugs or alcohol at some time in their lives. There were many environmental factors that were present with each one. Any of the data that was collected had to do with the past so it was historical research that was part of correlation research. The only ethical consideration would be the bias that the person conducting the research proposal was familiar with all of the stories of these serial killers. Conclusion This presentation showed the research that was done on serial killers and how they may have been motivated and what their environment was when they were growing up. Also if alcohol or drug use may have played a factor into their mental illness....
