Impromptu speaking- talking on the spot, usually rambing Manuscript speaking- full speech Speaking outline- written on notecards, give yourself cues to remember things during speech, (actions- smile) that isn’t on outline handed in Benefits of extemporaneous speaking- spontaneity, eye contact, allows to control audience, more conversational, all the above Extemporaneous speaking- outlined speech, not memorized but organized and researched Internal summary- within outline, summarize points of that main point Three types of supporting material- testimony, examples, statistics Two types of testimony- expert or peer (asking general population) testimony Comparing technique- putting numbers into analogies like Death Valley is 84000 Contrasting technique- two opposite ideas, shows the difference of something, how unlikely something is Connectives- transitions, internal previews and internal summaries Interference- something that interrupts the message Channel- face-to face channel, phone, internet, notes Residual message- overall thing you want your audience to take away Visualization- visualize things going well Inflection- emphasis of speech, intentionally changing vocal variety Pitch- how high or how low your voice is Citation- The author, source is from (sponsoring something), the year positive nervousness- tips, jittery feelings into enthusiastic feelings- walk around room Patchwork plagiarism- large chunks, main point from other speeches Global plagiarism- take the whole speech Incremental plagiarism- forget citations, using bits and pieces that aren’t cited Rhetorical question- no answer but question Kinesics- gestures, movement Pronunciation- way you sound out words- commonly accepted differences in way words are said- tomato, Caribbean, caramel, can pronounce words wrong -Antarctica is a mispronunciation THINK D Articulation- physical sound of words- saying gonna instead of going to Dialect- language based on region
