CHM-115L Qualitative Analysis Lab Summary Report Sheet – Spring 2021 Instructions 1. Type all data, descriptions, results, sample equations, and calculations. Calculations maybe done by hand but must be inserted as an image that meets the requirements posted. 2. Submit electronically to the Loud Cloud assignment box. The instructor may also require paper submissions. 3. Submit copies of the notebook pages for the lab to your instructor. Make sure that all of the data/results reported on worksheet are also in the notebook. These will not be returned. 4. For more specific guidelines and suggestions refer to the CHM115L Worksheet Guide. 5. Remember you must do your own work. Copying and pasting, even from a lab partner is considered cheating and students being caught will be penalized up to and including the filing of a charge of academic misconduct.
Warning: Activities on the first day of class are the only times you are allowed to use these worksheets in class! Item
Item Copies of notebook pages containing procedure and data recorded during lab. These are submitted at the end of Lab before the student leaves. Submission of these sheets is important because they are used to calculate the notebook check grade. Notebook pages – calculations and analysis. These are submitted in the class period with when the summary report is turned in online This report. Name, Section, and Date in the file header.

4. Post-Lab Questions 1. Describe the difference between quantitative and qualitative results. Give an example of each. Quantitative data relates to how much solution/chemical that can be counted or measured. Qualitative data refers to data that will help identify a chemical in a sample or information that cannot be measured. 2. Of the substances that produced bubbles upon the addition of acetic acid, what do they have in common? What gas was produced? The substance that produced bubbles when acetic acid had been added into H3BO3 and. NaOh. Both of these substances have hydrogens and an oxygen atom. They will both react to form carbon dioxide

3. Based on the test results, list each compound and properties determined about it through the different tests performed. Some of these can include solubility, polarity, acidity/basicity, and formation of gas. 4. CaSO4: Insoluble, turned yellow in iodine due to presence of starch, non-polar and ionic, basic salt. 5. CaCO3: insoluble, turned brown in iodine due to presence of starch, polar, formed of a strong base and weak acid. 6. C12H22O11: insoluble: turned black in the presence of starch, polar, acidic. 7. C6H12O6: soluble, ph 4, acidic, red precipitate indicating presence of a reducing sugar. 8.
H3BO3: insoluble, turned yellow in presence of starch in the iodine test, bubbles confirming a gas most likely CO2 was formed.
9. MgSO4: soluble, pH 7, basic, white precipitate formed (copper Thiocyanate), no change when added to sodium hydroxide. 10. NaHCO3: soluble, pH 10, basic, ionic compound. 11. NaOH: soluble, pH 14, Basic, ionic compound. 12. Na2CO3: soluble, pH 13, basic. 13. NaCL: soluble, pH 6, acidic, no change in benedics due to lack of starch, no metal ions formed due to no change in sodium hydroxide test. 14. What was the most difficult part about identifying your unknowns? What was the easiest? There was nothing truly difficult about the lab
5. Copies of Notebook Pages Submit the copies of the notebook pages recorded for this lab. Make sure that the notebook pages meet the criteria provided by the instructor.
