Description

Reflection paper on Nuclear Using nuclear energy for energy producing purposes is a controversial topic because of the risks it involves and the sustainability it can provide. Its advent and prevalent use poses many threats to world peace since, countries rather than using it solely for electricity production, do use it for creating nuclear weapons. But before making any rational decision to use nuclear as alternative to fossil fuel, the benefits and consequences should be evaluated. The benefits of nuclear energy explain why scientists consider it a plausible enough option to use it as sustainable alternative to energy production. It is a misconception that nuclear energy production involves a high death toll. In fact, it saves lives. The casualties which occur in coal mines and the carbon dioxide emission released into the environment are much more prevalent than the deaths caused by nuclear energy production. Another benefit is that there is no carbon emission such as which results in burning fossil fuels. Hence, it is not harmful for the environment at such a widespread and constant scale. Nuclear energy is the best way to positively curb the damages caused by climate change and the catastrophe caused by global warming. Also, as the technology progresses to advance, scientists can find better ways of disposing the nuclear waste and create safer power plants. Thorium, for instance, is abundant, less wasteful and sustainable in comparison. The disadvantages include the nuclear weapons proliferation, evil and the obsession with destruction and wars has led many small countries to develop reactor technology and create nuclear arms at a rapid rate, harming the balance of power. And this technology is further sold to smaller countries for monetary gain. The non-proliferation treaty cannot enforce its verdict upon member and of course non-member countries as well. The second big consequence of nuclear energy is the waste and pollution it will create. It is highly dangerous and is radioactive, such as

plutonium. Dumping the waste in the sea is also a horrible way of getting rid of the waste, in fact it is banned, but small countries still do it covertly. Also, finding secure place to dump the waste underground. Lastly, the accidents and disasters which can occur cause immediate deaths to hundreds and thousands of human beings and the area remains inhabitable for hundreds and thousands of years. My opinion is that nuclear power is rather a risk more than a sustainable option because the consequences it poses are far detrimental to the world than its benefits. Living in a pro-capitalist world, where everyone seeks their own benefit and everyone is obsessed with ruling over others, there is a great probability that nuclear power will b used to create havoc and more wars. Additionally, the accidents not only kill people right then and there but that area becomes inhabitable and causes deformities among newborns. Therefore it is better to stick to other nonrenewable resources than completely switching over to nuclear....
