Description

Registered Financial and Retirement Advisor Course (RFRA) - Part II WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW BEFORE YOU START THIS COURSE Congratulations and welcome to the Registered Financial and Retirement Advisor Course (RFRA) - Part II! Please read this document before you commence your studies—it contains important information about your course.

RFRA COURSE – PART II DELIVERY The RFRA Course – Part II is delivered in an online format. Whenever you wish to study, by default, you should login to the online course as it contains all of the course content, interactive exercises, the formal assessments that you are required to submit and a sample examination. A printed version of the course content is also available and while it replicates most of what is presented online, importantly, it does not contain the course content in its entirety. Notably, interactive exercises, supporting PDFs and external links, assessments and the sample examination cannot be reproduced in paper format. The printed text is intended for your convenience to be used when you do not have access to the Internet (e.g. when you want to study during your commute to and from work while on public transit) however, it is not a substitute for the actual online course.

RFRA COURSE – PART II STRUCTURE When you sign in to the RFRA Course, you will notice, from the table of contents on the lefthand side, that the course content is structured according to the following hierarchy: 

Units: The course is divided into ten units with each unit covering a broad topic area relating to retirement and estate planning.

Lessons: Within each of the ten course units are individual lessons that focus more directly on a particular learning objective or series of connected objectives that fall under that unit. Interspersed within each lesson are interactive exercises. These interactions can range in style from multiple-choice questions, true-false questions, fill-in-the-blank questions and mix and match questions.

Completing these exercises will break up the monotony of reading content and will keep you engaged while simultaneously, testing you on the concepts you have just read. These interactions will help you learn and we encourage you to do them but, your score on these exercises do not factor in to your overall course grade. At the end of each lesson, you will find an assessment. These informal assessments will reinforce your comprehension of the content you have just reviewed. These lesson assessments are strictly to enhance your learning—they do not count towards your final course grade. 

Individual pages of content: Each lesson is made up of individual pages of content with each page addressing a specific aspect of a learning objective in greater detail.

Formal assessments: Each unit of the course concludes with a formal assessment comprised of a series of multiple-choice questions tied to the learning objectives addressed in the unit. The completion of all 10 formal assessments is a course requirement and your grade on the formal assessments will factor in to your final course grade. You must obtain a minimum passing grade of 60% on each of the 10 formal assessments before you will be permitted to write the RFRA Course – Part II Final Examination.

RFRA COURSE – PART II TIMELINES You have one (1) year from the date of registration to successfully complete the RFRA Course – Part II. If at the end of this time you have not met all of the course requirements, your registration will expire and you will be required to re-enroll in the course. A re-registration fee will apply. Note: Scotiabank may impose a shorter timeline for you to complete this course. Please refer to My Learning Centre for details.

RFRA COURSE – PART II EVALUATION Successful completion of the Registered Financial and Retirement Advisor Course (RFRA) - Part II requires you to complete two mandatory components: i) ten end-of-unit formal assessments and ii) a proctored, paper-based final course examination The determination of your final course grade is based on the weighted average of these two components. To successfully complete the RFRA Course – Part II, you must attain a minimum grade of 60% on each of the 10 end-of-unit formal assessments and a minimum grade of 60% on the Final Examination. Based on these two components, you require an overall course grade of 60%.

Formal assessments: weighting – 30% The formal assessments are listed as such in the table of contents of the online course—they are the final page at the end of each of the ten units. These assessments are comprised of multiple choice questions that must be completed and submitted online. Your cumulative marks from these assessments form 30% of your final grade for the RFRA Course – Part II. Completion of all 10 formal assessments with a minimum grade of 60% on each assessment is a pre-requisite for you to be eligible to write the final course examination. In the event you do not achieve the minimum required grade on a particular assessment or assessments, before you will be permitted to register for the Final Examination, you will be redirected to the assessments on which you were unsuccessful. You will be required to redo these assessments and obtain a minimum grade of 60% on each of them. If necessary, the assessments can be attempted multiple times until your achieve a passing grade. Assessments do not need to be completed in sequence. So, if you are having difficulty with a particular unit and the formal assessment tied to it, you can leave it until the end and continue with the remainder of the course. Note: throughout the course, there are also informal assessments, exercises and interactions within each unit. While we strongly encourage you to work through them, these informal tests do not count towards your final mark. Only assessments found at the end of each unit and identified as ‘Formal Assessments’ are mandatory components for this course.

Final course examination: weighting – 70% The second factor that contributes to your grade for the RFRA Course – Part II is a final course examination. Before you can attempt the Final Examination, you must be enrolled in the course for a minimum of 28 days and you must have successfully completed all 10 end-ofunit formal assessments (having achieved a minimum grade of 60% on each assessment as detailed above). Once you qualify to write the Final Examination, you can register for an exam sitting of your choice through your CIFP online profile. Sittings are offered on a monthly basis at examination centres across the country. The deadline to register for any particular sitting is 28 days prior to the examination write date. The RFRA Course – Part II Final Examination consists of 81 multiple choice questions. The passing grade for the Final Examination is a minimum grade of 60%. You have a maximum of three attempts to successfully complete the Final Examination. You have a maximum of three hours to complete the examination. The Final Examination is paper-based and is invigilated. Using a pencil, you will record your answers on a Scantron sheet; answers marked in the examination booklet will not be graded. There is no penalty for an incorrect response so, if all else fails, make your best educated guess. However, questions for which you do not select an answer at all are automatically marked incorrect so, prior to returning your examination to the invigilator, it is in your best interests to ensure you have selected a response for each question.

Unsuccessful examination attempts If you are unsuccessful in your attempt of the Final Examination, you will have to register for a subsequent attempt of the Final Examination through your CIFP online profile. Keep in mind, the deadline to register for an examination is 28 days prior to the scheduled write date. In addition, after each unsuccessful Examination attempt, you will be required to complete the online sample examination before you will be able to rewrite the Final Examination.

RFRA COURSE – PART II SAMPLE EXAMINATION The RFRA Course – Part II contains a sample examination. You can access the sample examination through the table of contents of the online course—it is titled ‘Sample Examination’ and is the final page of the course. Click on the page and follow the instructions that appear. The sample examination is an option that is available to all registrants in the RFRA Course – Part II and can be done at your discretion. Completion of the sample examination only becomes mandatory following an unsuccessful attempt of the Final Examination; however, a passing grade on the sample examination is not required to write the Final Examination again.

Structure and importance of the sample examination The sample examination consists of 40 multiple choice questions that are reflective of the type of questions you will encounter on the Final Examination in terms of style of question, length and degree of difficulty. You should be able to complete the sample examination within 1.5 hours. Of significance, questions on the sample examination focus on the higher level learning objectives presented in the course and that have a strong likelihood of being tested on the Final Examination. Once you submit your responses on the sample examination, you will receive detailed feedback for each question that will give you a clear understanding of why the correct answer is in fact correct and just as importantly, why the incorrect responses are incorrect. This point cannot be overstated: the sample examination and the comprehensive feedback that is provided for each question is an extremely powerful study aid. There is a strong and irrefutable correlation between success on the Final Examination and students whose preparation for the Final Examination included attempting the sample examination and a detailed reading of the accompanying feedback. In short, you have been provided a key to success on the Final Examination for this course; you are strongly encouraged to take advantage of it.
