This course covers the life and works of the country’s national hero, Dr. José P. Rizal. It is designed to recognize the importance of Rizal’s ideals and teachings in relation to present conditions and situations in the society which encourage the application of such ideals in current social and personal problems and issues.By studying the lives of hero’s such Rizal, we are supposed to become more aware of the ideals that our country is founded upon. AUDIENCE The course is intended for Second Year Financial Management students.

TEACHING, LEARNING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGIES Teaching and Learning Styles This course will be taught through a combination of lecture, interactive discussion, video presentation, report and seminars. CLASS PARTICIPATION AND GROUPINGS. The students will form themselves into groups. There will be a total of seven (7) groups, although the number of group members will depend on the final number of class members. The groups will become the basis for group papers, class presentations, and the final integrating project. The strategy (group or individual presentations) will help the students to enhance their presentation skill. It is an avenue for the students to learn how to present the assigned topics which they can use in the real world. The students shall participate in class discussions and in discussions in their study groups. CLASS PRESENTATIONS. Class meetings are highly interactive. Participants are expected to attend class having read the required materials. Each group will lead one class discussion by reporting on the required readings. The presentation of the group will take 30 minutes. In making the presentation, please note that (1) the group must identify and explain at least five to ten keywords or key terms that capture the main points of the readings; and (2) the group must reflect on issues raised by the readings, and contrast what they have learned from the readings with whatever prior knowledge they had. The group is expected to be creative in making the presentation. QUIZZES, MAJOR EXAMINATIONS and INTEGRATION ACTIVITY. Quizzes are to be expected every class meeting. If a student is absent, there is no make up for a missed quiz. There will be three Major Examinations and one Integration Activity. The Major Examinations and the Integration Activity shall account for 60% of the final grade. The Integration Activity shall be the final project. It shall be a group project. It will offer students the opportunity to integrate what they have learned in this course. The project—which can take any creative form—must present Rizal in an interesting way to young Filipinos, college students in particular. This group project will be presented in class. If possible, students will be invited to judge the projects. The project will be assessed based on the following criteria: (a) complexity of ideas about Rizal encapsulated in the project: 40 percent; (b) creativity and effectiveness in conveying those ideas: 30 percent; (c) quality of the written text, including clarity of writing and quality of composition: 30 percent. WRITTEN OUTPUTS ● REFLECTION PAPERS. A reflection paper of about 100 words must be submitted on schedule indicated in the course outline. A topic, reading assignment or a film which will be the subject of reflection will be provided. It shall contain the student’s thoughts and analysis to what they have read and experienced. ● INDIVUDUAL THOUGHT PAPERS. Two individual thought papers must be submitted. ● INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PAPER 1. Write a paper on the topic: “Jose Rizal: A National Hero (What can I Learn and What can I Imitate?)? The paper must not be less than 100 words and not be more than 150 words. ● INDIVIDUAL THOUGHT PAPER2. Write a paper on the topic: “What can I contribute for the transformation of the Philippines? The paper must not be less than 100 words and not be more than 150 words. ● THOUGHT PAPERS. Four group thought papers must be submitted. The specific instructions and deadlines are contained in the detailed course schedule. ● GROUP THOUGHT PAPER 1. In your respective groups, discuss the question and then write a paper on the topic: “Given the characteristics of literature and the hazards of translation, is Republic Act 1425 realistic? Why or why not? The paper must not be less than 200 words and not be more than 300 words. ● GROUP THOUGHT PAPER 2. In your respective groups, discuss the question and then write a paper on the topic: “How has the social and educational background of Rizal shaped his thoughts? Do nurture play a role in forming great figures?” The paper must have a clear argument or thesis statement, and must be written in a coherent manner. The paper must not be less than 200 words and not exceed 300 words. ● GROUP THOUGHT PAPER 3. In your respective groups, discuss the question and then write a paper on the topic: “Considering the different analytical perspectives on the NoliMe Tangere, what are the implications for the teaching of this novel?” The paper must have a clear argument or thesis statement, and must be written in a coherent manner. The paper must not be less than 200 words and not exceed 300 words. ● GROUP THOUGHT PAPER 4 (no formal class meeting). In your respective groups, discuss the question and then write a paper on the topic: “Considering the analytical perspectives on El Filibusterismo, what are the implications for the teaching of this novel?” The paper must have a clear argument or thesis statement, and must be written in a coherent manner. The paper must not be less than 200 words and not exceed 300 words. COURSE REQUIREMENTS Quizzes and Major Exams 1. Quizzes will be given at the beginning of each class based on the agreed readings and discussion. A student who fails to take a quiz will automatically receive a grade of 50% unless otherwise he or she is excused. 2. Four major exams (Preliminary, Midterm, Semi-finals and Finals) will be given to assess what the students have learned. The passing grade will be computed based on this computation: (Raw Score/Total Number of Items in the Exam)*62.5+37.5) A student who gets an equivalent of 75% passed the major exam. Page 5 of 12

3. An automatic grade of 5.0 will be given to any student caught cheating in the examination. 4. Latecomers during the scheduled examinations are tolerated provided that they can finish the examination on the scheduled time limit without any time extensions Oral and Written Report Students should prepare a report based on specific topic will be given to them. No one is allowed to read his/her report directly from the book. Sources of the contents of their report shall be provided. Reports should be sent to the instructor three days before the schedule. A written report shall be submitted on or before the scheduled final examination. Class Participation Students are expected to participate actively during classroom discussion or submit assigned tasks as the case may require it. Consultation Students are encouraged to consult their instructor in the set schedule regarding their academic affairs and experiences while in the college. Consultation hours is scheduled every Tuesday and Thursday, 8:00 AM – 10:00 AM.

Students who will get a grade of 70-74 will be given a removal examination. Only one (1) removal exam will be given. A grade of “3.0” will be given to those who will pass the removal exam and those who will fail will be given a grade of “5.0”. *A grade of “Incomplete” must be complied with by the students within one (1) semester or one hundred fifty (150) days. A student who fails to complete the deficiency/ deficiencies at the end of the succeeding semester shall automatically obtain a grade of 5.0 in the course. Attendance Policy
