1. Before you began reading this book, what cultural associations did the word “rice” evoke in you? The word rice evoked an idea about Asian culture because just from prior knowledge I know a lot of their everyday life revolves around the food “rice”. 2. What do you think it means to say that rice is “sacred” for Jola? Are the any commodities or things in your society that are considered “sacred”? In what sense? I feel like when using the word sacred you’re bringing great importance to the rice, as it should be. Rice had become a pillar of living for the villagers, even calling it “the central feature” and also saying that population flows through rice, thus saying without would equal death....
