B. REVIEW OF THE PREVIOUS LESSON

[In this part of the lesson, the teacher will review “verbs” since there isn’t really any previous lesson.] Tell me what you can remember : Sir, verbs are words that denote about verbs, class. action and state of being.

Very good! Can anyone of you give me an example of an action verb?

: Sir, examples of action verbs include kick, sleep, think, etc.

Excellent! Now, what about stateof-being verbs? Mind to : Actually, sir, there is only one enumerate of few? state-of-being verb and it is “be.” “Is,” “are,” “was,” “were,” “been,” “being,” and “am” are just forms of the be-verb. Exactly! I’m very happy that you still remember what you learned about verbs! C. MOTIVATION

Before we go deeper into our lesson for today, let’s first have an activity. Here’s a list of eight (8) sentences. All you have to do is to determine whether verbs in the sentences are action verbs or state-of-being verbs. If you think the answer is “action verb,” all you have to do is to tack this logo (a logo that shows action) before the number. If you think the answer is “state-ofbeing verb,” all you have to do is to tack this other logo (a logo that shows the equal sign [=]) before : None, sir! the number. Do you any question? Alright! Let’s start! : 1. Napoleon Bonaparte is a famous French military leader. 2. The burning of the Alexandrian Library is a symbol of irretrievable : loss of public knowledge.

: 3. The Alexandrian burned in 391 AD.

Library

was :

4. The Earth’s core is very hot. 5. The owner of Waltz Disney is Walt Disney.

:

: 6. Last year, the Higgs Boson was found by CERN. : 7. The dogs are sleeping.

: 8. Many people are still seeking for the Holy Grail. D. Presentation of the Lesson

Thank you very much for your active participation. What we’ve just had has something to do with our lesson for today. Today, we’re going to talk about the difference between linking verbs and helping verbs. I hope you maintain your interest in our lesson until the end of our period. E. Lesson Proper

Who among you knows what linking verbs are?

: Sir, linking verbs are words that link the subject to the rest of the predicate. Moreover, it is easier to understand

linking verbs if we consider that they behave like the equal sign (=). Very good! It is true that linking verbs make the left side of the sentences equal to the right side. Among the sentences we had a while ago, : Those which use linking which has a linking verb? verbs in our example sentences are 1, 2, 4 and 5. Napoleon Bonaparte = a famous French military leader. The burning = a symbol. The Earth’s core = very hot. The owner = Walt Disney. Excellent! I see you’re very familiar with what linking verbs are. Now, what about helping verbs? Who among you verbs?

can define

helping : Sir, helping verbs are those which help action words become progressive or passivevoiced.

That’s correct! Now, why do we call helping verbs “helping” verbs? : Sir, action verbs cannot change into their progressive or passive forms without the assistance of helping verbs. Exactly! Here’s another way you can better understand helping verbs. Take this example sentence: She walksing.

Do you think this sentence makes sense based on how English is used every day? : No, sir! Okay. The reason behind this is because the action verb “walk” is carrying two things: the present tense and the progressive aspect. The weight of the present tense and the progressive aspect is too much for the action verb to handle. This the point where helping verbs come in.

[Before using a helping verb]

[After using a helping verb]

: Those which make use of helping verbs are 8, 7, 6 and 3.

Now, which of the example sentences we had using helping verbs? F. INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY
