Student B, what was our lesson yesterday?

His Picture by John Donne

And what about it?

It is an elegy which conveys a strong feeling of love of the persona to another person who already passed away.

None

Very good! Do you have any questions about it?

Since you already understood our lesson yesterday, we can now proceed to our new lesson for today. Motivation But before that, we will first have an activity.

Unlocking of Difficulties If you really read the story, I’m sure that you’ve encountered unfamiliar words. For you to be familiar with those words I’ve prepared an activity entitled, “Key Words”. This is very simple all you need to do is to answer the questions that will lead you to the meaning of the words. Is that clear? Questions:

1. How many words are there in the word “rice field”? 2. How many trunks are there in the story? 3. How many consonants are there in the word “suspect”? 4. How many syllables are there in the word “repentant” 5. How many vowels are there in the word “jealousy”?

Now that the unfamiliar words are clear to you, we can now proceed to our discussion today. But before that, let us take a look on a picture.

Yes, Ma’am Answers: 1. 2.a field where rice is grown 2. 1.a large, strong case or box used for storing things 3. 5.have an idea or impression of the existence, presence, or truth 4. 3.shows or says that they are sorry for something wrong they have done 5. 4. the state or feeling of being jealous

What can you say about the picture?

The picture is all about jealousy.

Nice idea. Have you felt being jealous?

Yes Ma’am

What makes you jealous?

I feel jealous when I feel that there’s someone he or she loves aside from me.

Well that’s a good point. Did you know that there’s a difference between jealousy and envy?

Can you tell me what their difference is?

Yes Ma’am.

We tend to be envious with someone or something that is not ours while we are often jealous because that something or

someone is ours. Lesson Proper Why am I asking these? I am asking these because for today we will discuss the short story “The Small Key” by Paz Latorena. Class why do you think is the purpose of using key?

To lock and unlock things.

Exactly. Before we proceed to the story itself, let us first listen to the story. Now, some of you will have to read the summary of the story in front, with full emotions as if you are really telling a story. Let’s see if you really understand the story.

(The students will listen to the story)

Where did the story happen?

Very good! Why do you think they lived in the rice field?

Exactly! They lived in the rice field because Pedro is a farmer.

The story happened in the house of Pedro near the rice field.

They lived in the rice field because Pedro is a farmer.

How about in the characters? Can you cite the main characters of the story? The characters are Pedro and Soledad Correct. What have you observed on the names of the characters? The author used Filipino names. Exactly! Instead of using Stephanie, Michael, or James, he used Filipino names to show the local color. Since the author is a proud Filipina. Let us know more about the characters as we discuss the plot of the story.

I have here five pictures of the events in the story. If you really read the story I want you to arrange it in their proper order. I need five representatives. (The students will arrange the following events.) Thank you. It’s seems that you’ve really comprehend it. Let’s see if your answers are correct.

Class, when did the story begin?

Very good. The story begins when they were eating as Pedro is preparing himself because the rice field will produce plenty on that day.

The story started with Pedro and Soledad, as they were eating.

How about the next picture? Do you think it is right?

Alright and what did Pedro removed?

Why?

Good. What did Pedro take out from his pocket?

Great. He gave the large key to Soledad and put the small key into his coat. Since it was too hot he removed his coat. Now, what did Soledad do when Pedro leave the house?

Exactly. What thing fell while Soledad is folding the coat?

Good. What happened when she saw the small key?

Very good. Although she is not feeling well, she started to become curious about the small key. And

Yes Ma’am.

His coat.

He removed his coat because it was too hot. He took out strings which held two keys

Soledad folded his coat.

The small key fell while Soledad is folding the coat. She got curious and she can’t help herself to think about what is something behind it.

what did she found out?

Exactly. Soledad started to wonder why Pedro still kept those clothes. She started to feel that Pedro might still love her.

A trunk which contains the old clothing that belongs to Pedro’s first wife.

Let’s look on the third picture. What did Pedro saw the next morning?

Correct and Pedro is hoping that Soledad was just mistaken. What happened next?

He saw burned clothes which belong to his first wife.

He returned to their house and he found out that the trunk was empty. Good. It only means that Soledad intended to burn the clothes of his first wife. After that what did Pedro do? Because Soledad was still ill, he hoped that Soledad would explain sooner and that she would be repentant. Very good. Does Pedro forgive her? Yes, because he loves Soledad. Exactly. Did you enjoy the story? Yes Ma’am. What is the theme of the story? The theme of the story is building trust in one’s relationship. Exactly. In every relationship there should always be trust.

Application Now if you don’t have questions, let’s have an activity. I have here a key and I will let you pass it next to you while the music is playing. When it stops, you need to answer this question:

“If you are Soledad, what would be your explanation to Pedro?”

Are you ready? Let’s start.

Yes, Ma’am.

Summarization

( The student will start passing the key)

Did you enjoy the game? Now, let’s have a short recap about our discussion today. What is the title of our story that we’ve discussed?

Yes, Ma’am.

Right. What have you learned in the story? The Small Key by Paz Latorena

Very good. A relationship is not always perfect. It is a matter of handling a certain misunderstanding. Just like what Pedro did. Do you have any questions or clarifications about the story?

I have learned that as Pedro forgave her wife without any doubt, he is just proving the real essence of love. We should forgive and forget.
