1. Which social movement did you choose, and what interests you about the movement? The social movement that I chose for this assignment is the Black Lives Matter movement. The Black Lives Matter movement interests me because black and brown people are more likely to be killed by police than white people. 2. How have you learned about this social movement (news articles, social media, social commentary, conversation with others, television news)? I first learned about the Black Lives Matter movement shortly after the death of George Floyd. The social media/news coverage of Black Lives Matter protests and riots shortly after the death of George Floyd captivated all social media/news. Social media was used to raise awareness regarding the Black Lives Matter movement, in some respects, it was being used to reunite our nation. 3.What is the “big question” or inquiry that the movement is trying to answer? The constant mistreatment of people of color and lack of accountability for law enforcement officers is what has kept this movement active. The Black Lives Matter movement directly impacts my day-today life because I am black. As a mother of black children, I have to try to teach my children about racial disparities that people of color endure from law enforcement and the world. Why are people of color automatically perceived as a threat? Why should we have to try the teach our kids how to treat the police if they encounter law enforcement. Traditionally most people of color distrust police and have taught their children to speak calmly to authority figures and to follow their directions....
