Expected Pharmacological Action silver sulfadiazine is shown to have a bactericidal effect by damaging the cell wall of gram+ & - bacteria. It also has been shown to be effective against yeasts
Therapeutic Use Prevention and treatment of bacterial or yeast infections of the skin. Found to be effective when other agents have failed.
Complications Hives, anaphlactisis, fever,stomatitis, unusual bruising or bleeding, difficulty swallowing, red or purple skin spots, confusion, hematuria, swelling, itching, tiredness, epigastric pain, jaundice, leukopenia
Contraindications/Precautions severe renal or hepatic disfunction, hypersensitivity to sulfa or silver, pregnant women approaching or at term, infants < 2 months
Interactions
Medication Administration Apply to wound surface at 1/16th inch thickness. Apply 1 to 2 times daily. Re-apply if it is wiped off. Re-apply following hydrotherapy. May be used with dressing if patient requires. Monitor for signs of localized reaction or systemic reaction.
Nursing Interventions Clean wound, application of medication as prescribed, monitor for signs of infection. Monitor for signs of allergic reaction.

Client Education Evaluation of Medication Effectiveness Monitor wound borders for enlargment. Monitor for discoloration r/t infection.
