Description

Deviant Behavior and Social Control Inderbitzin In-class assignment

Name:

When people ask the question, what causes crime, they tend to think in terms of individualistic causes of deviance. That is, they are looking to answer the question of why certain individuals engage in crime and deviant behavior and others do not. The social disorganization perspective asks a different question: Why is there more crime in certain areas than in others? What are community level characteristics which influence the rate of crime/deviance in any given area? Think about the documentary Hoop Dreams. What did you notice about the neighborhood(s) that Arthur and William grew up and lived in? What did the neighborhoods look like? What kinds of things went on there? What did people say about these areas?

Now think about the neighborhood in which the school, St. Joe’s, is located. What did it look like? What did people say about it?

Which neighborhood do you think had higher crime rates? Why do you think so? What are the important characteristics to consider?

Think about the neighborhood(s) that you grew up in. What was it like? What factors do you think contributed to the crime rates (high or low) in your neighborhood?

Stark argues that there must be “something about places as such” that sustains crime and deviance. What are characteristics of areas that might sustain high crime rates? What are the mechanisms by which these characteristics might influence crime (how do they come into play?)?

If you were trying to lower crime/deviance rates in a given neighborhood, where would you start? What specifically would you target and try to improve? What processes would be involved in decreasing crime/deviance?...
