Sliwa/PSY362/ Social Psychology Network Name__Morgan Hartman__________________________________________ Instructions: ● Choose a famous psychologist from the following list: Leon Festinger, Stanley Milgram, Floyd Allport, Solomon Asch, Albert Bandura, Kurt Lewin, Muzafer Sherif, Susan Fiske, Bibb Latane, Robert Zajonc, Philip Zimbardo ● Research your psychologist and determine his/her perspective on social psychology. ● Explore the Social Psychology Network website at http://www.socialpsychology.org ● Find the “online psychology studies” link. This can be found on the left side under “Social Psychology Pages”. From that link, choose one professional study and one student study that best fits the theorist you have chosen and complete the studies. ● Answer all questions below My chosen psychologist is Soloman Asch His/her social psychological perspective is Many would say that Soloman Asch has pioneered social psychology to become what it is today, one of the things that he would focus on is peer pressure and how that would affect that person and their behavior. His/her main contributions to social psychology are Soloman's main contributions to a society where he was one of the first to ever study social psych, he came up with a suggestion that behavior is not a response but how we perceive, he also came up with impression formation. “Asch tried to demonstrate that people’s impressions of other people are structured whole. To support this claim, Asch read lists of trait names to participants and asked for their impression of the person described by those traits.” (Gleitman, H., Rozin, P., & Sabini, J. (1997). What professional study did you take? Briefly explain the study. I took the Judging Facial Expressions test. I asked myself some questions and then the experiment showed a picture of a person and I had to identify as quickly as possible if I saw fear or anger by pressing a button. After that, I was asked if I believed men and women expressed fear and anger in the same capacity. The point of the study was to test the idea that people are biased when making decisions. What student study did you take? Briefly explain the study.

Sliwa/PSY362/ Social Psychology Network The study was called the Social Trait Judgements in Faces and Voices experiment. The first test had me listen to a bunch of different voices and I would rank them by how attractive I thought they were. There were a bunch of numbers underneath the audio, 1 being most unattractive and 7 being very attractive. The second test was showing pictures of people and I would also rank them by attractiveness just how I would rank the voices. Describe your overall experience of the studies. Were they interesting? Were they easy to complete? Were you surprised by the questions asked in the study? Were you surprised at the outcome? The studies were very interesting to me, I learned a couple of things about myself with the second experiment. I learned that I find Irish accents extremely annoying especially when they are female. I also learned how judgmental I can be when first looking at someone's appearance. I was not surprised by the questions and I was not particularly surprised by my results. Neither experiment didn’t give me too much feedback on my answers, but I was not surprised by my outcome, I was more surprised at myself when I was taking the quizzes, realizing my initial reactions were a different experience for me. Has completing this study changed your initial impression about professional or student research? Did you notice any differences? I don’t necessarily believe my initial impression changed, I didn’t expect the professional experiment to be as casual as it was, I didn’t notice too much of a difference between the two tests when they were being conducted which was quite interesting to me. I also was surprised that the student research did not give me a lot of feedback, I was expecting more. Explain how the studies connect to the theorist you chose above. These experiments involve Solomon Asch because he was one of the first psychologists to pioneer social psychology and focused on behavior. One of the ways we can understand behavior is understanding our reactions, one of those reactions being how we respond to seeing or hearing someone's voice.
