Description

Social Self Describe the self-enhancement and self-verification motives for self-esteem. Integrate expert citation for each definition and provide an example. Self-verification is wanting someone to see you the way you see yourself and selfenhancement is finding ways to make yourself feel good about yourself. These can increase your self-esteem. In different social situations, people act differently and behave differently because “individuals seek to verify their self-perceptions by behaving in a way that is consistent with those self-perceptions” (Ferris, Lian, Brown, & Morrison, 2015).

After exploring different social media platforms (Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, etc), discuss which motive (self-enhancement or self-verification) were the most evident in the sites. Be sure to justify your response with examples. Self-verification is the most evident in social media platforms. Many people portray themselves differently on social media platforms or use those platforms to gain positive, but sometimes negative, feedback from others. Receiving feedback and others’ opinions motivates self-verification. This lets individuals conserve, mend or change their self-perceptions. For example, if someone were to post a selfie and receive positive comments on the post, this would increase their self-esteem and feel more secure about themselves because others see them the way they want to be seen.

Discuss if you think these online portraits of people are accurate. Be sure to explain. Integrate expert justification. I do not think online portraits of people are accurate. Some people use social media as a façade. They use it to hide their insecurities or as a distraction. But some people use social media platforms for attention. Either way, this helps increase their self-esteem and makes them feel more liked by others.

Explain if the prevalence of being exposed to social factors on social media influences individual behavior and the development of the social self. Share examples, justifying how social media does or does not influence the development of the social self. Social media influences how individuals behave and act. It also influences the development of the social self. Individuals who are more genuine and are more authentic on social media are more likely to create honest and healthy relationships with people online and in real life. Many

people use social media may experience increased feelings of low self-esteem, depression, anxiety and/or body dysmorphia.

Share some of the positive and negative aspects associated with social media sites. Pull from your own experiences, but justify this section with some expert research. A positive aspect of social media platforms is that it could help increase self-esteem in individuals because it can help develop and improve friendships. However, a negative aspect of social media is that it could affect individuals with low self-esteem by causing them to behave different and portray themselves differently online. This is could cause them to be less likable. Another negative aspect of social media is that it could cause low self-esteem, narcissism, body dysmorphia and other psychological disorders (Rosen, Whaling, Rab, Carrier, & Cheever, 2013).
