Summary

This is a mandatory assignment t given by Dr. Shane Latchman. The prompt is to find images/ media/ ads that perpetrate thought of concepts covers in class. ...

Description

Western views have often described women who wear hijabs or burkas to be oppressed and silenced. I've had that perspective in the past, however after further discussion and research, I see that it is not always that way. I found this cartoon to be rather interesting, because both women in their thought process come the same conclusion that they live in a “cruel male-dominated culture.” One woman walks by wearing a bikini exposing everything but genitalia and eyes. At the same time a woman wearing a Burka walks by and expresses her feeling that nothing is covered but her eyes. Both perspectives exist, the difference lies between which one an individual will partake in.

The saying is “sex sells,” the sad truth is it is too real. This ad for an alcoholic drink sends out the impression that this man and woman want to party in the moment and take consequences late. Or is it? This ad perpetuates rape. It does so in a way that this ad is meant to target men, with use of dark colors and a woman bending over. Giving the impression that by drinking this alcoholic drink, a woman can become incapacitated and become unable to give consent. The ad say “Apologize later,” leading the consumer to commit a wrongdoing now and just say sorry later.

When I first saw this ad (right) I didn’t catch the problem. I am a person of color, but I am not black. I saw at first no offence, but once I read what people were saying, I thought to myself “That’s true,” Dove is a soap company and in this ad (right) a woman of color wearing a brown shirt, and after using Dove, she miraculously is wearing a light shirt is now thinker and white. I included the ad on the left because I saw a Twitter post that had both pictures next to teacher with a caption that read “I see no difference.”

Burger King has been offering inexpensive meals, though couponing and ad’s. However this ad has a hidden meaning. “It’ll BLOW your mind away” and a picture of a woman with her mouth open. This hidden message refers to oral sex. A woman opening her mouth to a long sandwich, how obvious is that, especially using the word “BLOW” with the term “blow job” which is a synonym to receiving oral sex from a person to a man. I feel this ties back to the internal internal locus of control, people are in some way shape or form are influenced by ads. A young tween boy looking at this ad will see the culture of sex as a normal thing. Sex is a normal thing, but in my opinion, sex should not be the face for fast food.

Newsnasty.com I am no one to tell a woman what medical procedures she should or shouldn't do. With that, I am deeply saddened by this. I can’t say I'm offended, but, I don't know what other word to use. Growing up in predominantly Christian home, association with people who have the same beliefs as me, I believe abortion is the riding of a baby, therefore I  would never have an abortion. Like I said, It is not my role or position to tell a woman what to do, and just like I have no say, politicians have should have no say either. The ad on the left was to be run on major newspapers like USA Today and LA Times, however they refused. The did run the ad, but they added the second part with the hot dog. I am saddened that a view is mocked, isn’t today supposed to be about inclusivity and equal rights. Or is respecing a life a baby, the same as processed food for consumption. I am offended, how can a baby be compared to a hot dog. They are in no way similar. Sure no one can speak or communicate, but that's not the point of the initial ad. A hot dog cannot develop emotions, where as a baby in the womb already displays emotions. This is absurd, if anyone mocked a pro-choice ad, they would catch fire. Why is it not the same way around?

I saw this ad and was particularly intrigued because I rarely see celebrities posing this raw for animals. This is Noah Cyrus, I know her as the younger sister of Miley Cyrus. She is apparently an advocate for saving animal lives. I am in somewhat a torn situation because when I was in high school, we dissected a frog. Plot twist, it was a virtual frog. My classmates and I virtually dissected a frog though an app. At the time, and now, I wish we had dissected a real animal to fully comprehend the intricacy of animals. I clearly remember a dead baby pig inside a solution that was on the classroom shelf. Now, the dimema is, should an animal be killed for educational purposes. That's what “classroom experiments” are, to further education. This reminds me of a class reading, regarding a woman that will intentionally “sell out” a young boy for money, knowing he will be killed. Are we “selling out” animals for our own knowledgeable pleasure? Maybe we are, however we can’t turn away form the fact that animal testing had lead us to many medical breakthroughs. What confuses me is the message of the ad. Is it against only classroome xperimetns, ones that teenages will forget aout in a few months, or full on Animal experimentation. I cannot tell from the ad.

J. Cole’s Crooked Smile is about having crooked teeth. Wrong. J. Cole in fact does not have straight teeth, and claims to keep it that way because he wants to show that even though he’s rich, he doesn’t need straight teeth to make it in the business. I chose this section of the rap, where he says that they don’t look like the typical people we see in Lyrics from J. Cole Crooked Smile movies and tv media, those who look like perfect beauty queens. Rather he says they have a right to chase their dreams despite the situation in the country. Then he proceeds to say that the nation has a crooked smile braces couldn't fix. Maybe he's referring to the systematic oppression to people of color. My favorite line is where he says “If my skin pale, would I then sell like Eminem or Adele?” This lyric caught my attention the first time I heard this song back in 2014. Eminem sold over 5 million copies of his CD, would J. Cole have sold as much if he was white, maybe. This was the song, along with its music video that opened me to see the part of this country that is under oppression

Screenshot taken from Jimmy Kimmel Episode Jimmy Kimmel in an episode of his late night talk show had Donald Trump to read a book in a Dr. Seuss themed form, with rhymes and funny references. “ Which one will you be a loser like them or a winner like me.” Maybe this isn't as controversial as the other photographs I chose, but I do feel it gives quite the humor to what Donal really feels. Comparing Mexicans to frogs.. I’m not offended, I am in fact Mexican, but this is probably how Donald sees my family. Like “Here are these [Mexicans] I do not like at all, we must kick these [Mexicans] out and then build a wall.” Same idea he tried to implement with this wall he wants to build. This reminds me of some themes in the readings thought our course, where white people have often felt entitled to kick people of color out....
