Sociological mindfulness- Schwalbe How is mindfulness different from intelligence Making sense of the world - Sociology= new perspectives in everyday life which require analytical thinking - Starting points: we are interdependent and must consider how our lives affect others - Sociological mindfulness makes us more responsible: we see consequences of our acts beyond our intentions - Because different people have different experiences they disagree about how society is or should be Inventing the social world - Power of ideas= power of shared beliefs - Social world is durable because people refuse to doubt the ideas that hold it together - Ideas help ppl to feel good about themselves and shape actions - Breaking away from shared beliefs shows tangible resistance of Seeing connections - Sociological mindfulness= taking a larger view of things - The social world is full of signs (or representations) which we can call indexes - Seeing and reading social indicators (influences) is sociological mindfulness - This is a skill we learn, so that we are able to recognize non-obvious indexes - Stay connected to the past to re open on the present Relationships/groups - People in western society often fail to see their interdependence, especially those who strive for success - Sociological mindfulness shows us the social bases of achievemennts - Our limited knowledge of the world and of ourselves arises from our

Becoming human - Be mindful of how social life makes us human - What we become as individuals is the realization of one set of possibilities - Our identities are the meanings we give to ourselves and tell others - Locating ourselves relative to others tells them how to treat us - Accept perspectives with hearts of reason, which is insufficient Behavior= product of interaction - Pay attention to cultural context - Culture= a mode of broader environmental adaptation - Context does not determine behavior. Unpredictability is an important consequence of social interaction - Take holistic views of microsociological topics: eg. The wider view of heart disease means to look beyond the body to see the strains and stresses of peoples lives...
