INTRODUCTION In this experiment, the students are required to conduct a spot speed study at the selected area by recording the speeds of sample vehicle in order to estimate the distribution of speeds of vehicles. Level of openness for this experiment is level 1 laboratory activity where the problems and ways & means are provided to the students.
OBJECTIVES The objectives of the study are: a) To establish the speed distribution of a traffic stream at a specific site or called as basic speed data. b) To determine vehicle speed percentiles via speed trend analysis, which are useful in speed related decision making.
THEORETICAL BACKGROUND Spot speed is the instantaneous speed of a vehicle at a specified location. Spot speed study can be used to design the geometry of road like horizontal and vertical curves, super elevation and others. Location and size of signs, design of signals, safe speed, and speed zone determination, require the spot speed data. Spot speed studies also used to determine the speed distribution of a traffic stream at a specific location. The data gathered in spot speed studies are used to determine vehicle speed percentiles, which are useful in making many speed-related decisions. The spot speed data are gathered manually and automatically. The stopwatch method is the least expensive and least accurate because of a small sample size were taken over a relatively short period of time. compared to using radar gun. Study of speed characteristics is the most essential perquisite for any improvement of traffic facilities. The actual speed of vehicles over a particular route may fluctuate widely depending on several factors such as traffic condition, time, place, environment and driver.
2
PROBLEM STATEMENT Over speeding is one of the major causes of road accidents in Malaysia. Speed limits are implemented to prevent over speeding of vehicles. To determine whether the drivers of vehicles comply with the speed limit, spot speed studies are carried out to determine the speed of vehicles operating on the road.
APPARATUS ▪
Radar gun meter
▪
Road measuring wheels
▪
Stopwatch
▪
Safety vest
METHODOLOGY
(MANUAL - STOPWATCH) 1. Necessary preparations such pens or pencils, radar meter spot study data forms and clipboards, radar meter was performed. Ensure all the equipment were in good conditions. Read instructions and procedure for the used radar gun. Backup battery, safety vests and others were obtained too. 2. Study location was decided, and the selected site should be straight and level of the road section that represents different traffic conditions. 3. The layout of the study area was sketched with the description of chosen reference points, position of observation, number of lanes and class of road. 4. Two (2) reference points was selected as Start and End point with a distance of 50 meters apart. 5. Two (2) station observers at Start and End point. 6. Observer at the starting point was gave a sign to observer at the end point to record the vehicle’s time travel form start point to the end point. 7. The other observer was recorded the plate registration number and vehicle classification of selected vehicle. 3
8. The speed of vehicles was determined by using speed formula, speed = distance/time (km/h).
(AUTOMATIC – RADAR GUN) 1. Necessary preparations such pens or pencils, radar meter spot study data forms and clipboards, radar meter was performed. Ensure all the equipment were in good conditions. Read instructions and procedure for the used radar gun. Backup battery, safety vests and others were obtained too. 2. Study location was decided and the selected site should be straight and level of the road section that represents different traffic conditions. 3. The layout of the study area was sketched with the description of chosen reference points, position of observation, number of lanes and class of road. 4. The sample was selected randomly, for examples the observer could record a speeding reading for every third vehicle or every fifth vehicle. 5. The radar meter was made as direct a line with oncoming traffic as possible, meaning to make it as close to the roadway as possible. 6. The vehicle speeds was observed for duration of one hour or until get 100 samples.
