A. What role do machines play in our lives today? Have your students keep a journal that lists every machine that helps them live their lives. A list might start, for example, with the alarm clock that wakes them up, the refrigerator that keeps the milk cold, the water heater that keeps the water hot, the computer that transmits email and stores their homework, the vehicle that drives them to school, the phones that deliver messages and pictures, and so on. What would life be like without these machines? In discussion or writing, have them imagine a world where one by one, all these machines vanish. How would we eat, communicate, travel, etc.? I grew up in a generation using modern technology. All of these gadgets were useful and they are all necessary for my everyday life. Here is the list of things that I find the most important for me to have every day: (a) a phone that I use to study, socialize, communicate, and be more aware of recent issues or news (b) calculator that helps me as an accountancy student to solve accounting problems (c) an electric fan that makes me comfortable against the warm weather everyday (d) my eyeglass that improves my poor eyesight (e) public vehicles and our private vehicle that eases the transportation (f) the stove that helps us to cook easily (g) the tap that gives us easy access to water (h) the printer that helps me with my academics instead of writing it all down If these things would vanish one by one, the purpose of technology that it will make human ’s life easier would also vanish. I think, losing these things will result in a life as our ancestors had. I watched this one anime entitled Dr. Stone where they were turned into stone for many years until all the inventions were taken over by nature. They all started again from the start, from a world of modern technology they shifted to the stone age. If the most important technological things I had will vanish, and every one of us will experience the same, it will be a big transition for all of us. We might not experience that stone age but we have to go back to the old way of living like sending letters, computing manually, using a hand fan, cooking foods with fire and charcoal, fetching water from the river or well, and writing everything that we have to write down. It will consume most of our time and our lives will not be as easy anymore.

B. Turning what they learn to the past, have your students research on the history of a machine that has become indispensable to us today. What did people do before a particular machine was invented (e.g ., clocks)? What changes happened when the machine was invented? Turning toward the future, ask your students to think of machines that have yet to be invented? What things will become necessary to future generations that we do not have? Our ancient scientists contributed a lot to what we have today. One of the most well-known inventors was Thomas Edison, the most credited inventor of the light bulb. And before the invention of it, people used candles, fire, gaslight, or oil lamps as light. During that era when light bulbs were not yet invented, people tend to sleep more because they can only work during the day and when the night comes, there are just few things that they can do because they have no light. It was a hard life for them during the night because they became less productive and less safe. After the invention of the light bulb, it helped society in many ways. With the help of it, a 24-hour workday was created, society became safer, it gave light to our homes and helped us with our chores even during the night and our life doesn’t end when the sun comes down. Light bulb made a great impact on our society and is now indispensable in our daily lives. If there could be a machine that is not yet invented but would probably help a lot of people when it comes to life, it’s an energy-generating car. This could save a lot of the consumer’s money. The wheels will work as a windmill wherein it will produce energy the more it spins, the energy will be stored in the car’s battery wherein it can help to run the car and can also be used in our homes. There are still a lot of uninvented inventions that will help the future generation a lot more, just like self-driving cars, more equipment and appliances that are voice commanded, a new vehicle that will solve the problem of traffic (e.g flying cars), and a lot more. The future has more new things waiting for us and we don’t know how more advanced technology will be but we must always keep in mind that we should control technology and not the other way around....
