International Outbreak The international outbreak topic I choose to write about is respiratory syndrome coronavirus (COVID-19). B. Description of a chosen specific international outbreak Includes: The first confirmed person-to-person coronavirus case was reported in the United States after a woman of Illinois was diagnosed with the virus after she got home from Wuhan, China. The women traveled to Wuhan sometime in mid-early January, and the case was confirmed on Thursday, January 30, 2020, by US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Howard, 2020). B1. Epidemiological Determinants and Risk Factors The outbreak began in Wuhan China, and transmission became greater due to people traveling in and out of the country (Howard, 2020). At the time of the outbreak, there were no coronavirus vaccinations available and the virus was not known to have any existing human immunity. Everyone is considered vulnerable to the virus however, there are risk factors that increase an individual’s illness severity. High-risk individuals include 65 years and older, people living in a long-term care facility, chronic lung disease & asthma, heart conditions, immune-compromised, severe obesity, pregnant women, &, etc. The gross number of COVID-19 confirmed cases in the United States had reached nearly 29 million with 526,000 deaths as of March 10, 2021 (Elflein, 2021). According to the American Academy of pediatrics children who get the COVID-19 are very unlikely to have severe symptoms that result in death. Children represent 13.2% of all reported cases. Mortality rates in the states among children who had the virus as of March 8, 2021, were 0.00%-0.04% (American Academy of Pediatrics, 2021). B2. Route of Transmission

Primarily, coronavirus is most likely to spread with person-to-person contact, often through respiratory droplets after coughing, talking, or sneezing. After droplets land on surfaces, the virus can still be contagious for up to days. The virus may also spread when a person touches a contaminated surface and then touching their eyes, mouth, or nose. The best way to reduce the risk of getting the virus is by maintaining a social distance of at least 6 feet from others, performing frequent hand hygiene. B3. Impact in My Community at a Systems Level COVID-19 outbreak is disastrous for many different reasons but the biggest reason being that this specific pandemic has not been temporary, it has become a way of living. The outbreak would cause the government to shut down small businesses, restaurants, and public gatherings. This would put many people in financial hardships’ like waitresses, bartenders, and small business owners like hair stylists. School systems would have to send homework home and teach virtually. Parents and family members would be accountable for their children’s education and would be responsible, and coordinate homework pickup and drop-off. Childcare services would shut down due to exposure or governed regulations. Many families especially low-income families cannot afford to take off and stay home with their children and depend on their children eating school lunch, as that may be their only meal of the day. Achieving herd immunity without a vaccination could be destructive to people’s health, potentially overwhelming to hospital systems, and cause a high mortality rate. To properly care for COVID-29 patients’ hospitals would need to be heavily stocked with supplies of face masks, respirators, gowns, gloves, eye protection such as face shields or goggles. Proper staff training of PPE application and removal is extremely important to decrease the risk of transmission. Rooms would need to be under negative pressure and hospitals may have to triage patients at COVID-19 specific locations, so

other patients are not exposed. The hospital would have to expand its staffing to care for the increased patient load and decrease nurse & provider burnout. B4. Reporting Protocol for an Outbreak in My Community According to Wisconsin Health Department, communicable diseases such as coronavirus are considered to in category I. The diseases that fall under this category are urgent and must be reported immediately when a provider suspects or diagnosis the disease, via phone to the patient’s local health office. Then within 24 hours, the case report must be submitted to the Wisconsin Electronic Disease Surveillance System (WEDSS) (Disease Reporting, 2021). The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Winnebago County, Wisconsin follows the state law and reporting guidelines which are listed on their health department website as the protocol stated above. B5. Two Strategies to Prevent an Outbreak in My Community The first strategy I would use to prevent the COVID-19 outbreak in my community is to educate and enforce the importance of social distancing and require masking when entering any public place until the outbreak is resolved. Hospitals and clinics would need to have the proper amount of PPE and lifesaving resources such as a ventilator to care for patients. I would also make sure that my community had access to updates on public health through television, mobility devices, radio stations, etc. C.
