Task 2 Your Name Western Governors University
Date
TASK 2
2 Community Outbreak
Description of the Outbreak Include:
Name of the disease
The countries involved
The date the outbreak was discovered
The dates the disease reached each involved country.
The outbreak must be within the past 50 years. Some examples are the 2009 outbreak of H1N1, the 2000 outbreak of meningitis during Hajj, and the 2015 outbreak of measles at Disneyland. If the outbreak traveled to many countries, choose 2 or 3 countries and provide the dates. It can be difficult to find a specific outbreak on HIV and Zika! Epidemiological Determinants
Discuss the route of transmission of the disease
Discuss the risk factors involved
What are epidemiological determinants?
A determinant is anything that increases disease frequency in a population. Risk Factors and Transmission are both epidemiological determinants. However, you should discuss other determinants relevant for your outbreak here such as infectivity (how easily spread is it?), virulence (how deadly is it?), mode of transmission (Vector? Contact? Aerosol?), climate considerations (i.e. does the vector survive arid or cold temperatures?), antigenic stability (i.e. Influenza) and any other appropriate variable. Epidemiologic determinants provide the “why” and “how” of an event. Considerations for the spread of a communicable disease are

demographics, environmental conditions, public health prevention measures (e.g. immunizations), and health status of individuals (e.g. immune compromised?) The epidemiological determinants are specific to an outbreak. For example, hot weather is a determinant for measles and meningitis. Crowding can be another determinant, as can long plane rides. Effects of the Outbreak on a Community How will the outbreak effect the community on a systems level? Include how the outbreak would affect:
schools
Local governments
Businesses
Hospitals
This is your chance to be creative!
Reporting Protocol What is the reporting protocol in your community? Usually the reporting protocol is something like healthcare providers report to the local health dept., who reports to the state health dept., who reports to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Two Strategies to Prevent an Outbreak in My Community For example, patient education, immunization, social media campaigns
