Catherine Mendez 001265766 2/25/20 RESPONSE When looking for a University, I wanted classes tailored to my schedule and work ethic. I am capable of excelling further when I am not restricted to a classroom. I struggled through multiple family issues, which affected my ability to attend classes. Now that life has settled down, I want to attend a university where I can accelerate without paying extra costs. I am fully prepared and committed to achieving my degree. My family has endured many hardships. As I matured, I realized a degree is necessary to go further in life. With my degree, I’ll be able to accomplish my long-term goal of obtaining a stable career. It will have bettered my families lives by showing them they will no longer worry about an unpredictable future. It will ease their mind knowing I am working in the career field of my choice. I will also have a solid career. With my degree I am opening many doors to possible jobs. Financially, it will greatly impact my future as well. I am currently enrolled in Bachelor of Arts, Elementary Education. My WGU program requires classes that shows I am competent of teaching in a classroom. Each course covers necessary math skills, communication skills, and behavioral skills. Before being able to complete my preclinical experience and demonstration teaching, I have to pass the necessary exams and a background check. Two specific requirements this degree requires is to firstly, complete a state mandated content exam that aligns with my program and a basic skills exam. Secondly, before I can receive state licensure, I will have to complete Preclinical experience and Demonstration Teaching to complete my required hours. When enrolling for terms at WGU, I have to complete a minimum of 12 CU’s to be considered a full-time student and study the minimum of 15-20 hours a week. Since I desire to accelerate my degree, I have to complete more than 12 CU’s each semester. To successfully complete my competency units, I have to keep communication with my Program Mentor. My mentor is a positive influence who keeps me on the right track. I must ensure to speak with my course instructor as well to make sure I am completing work in a timely manner. Successful completion of these competency units will keep me on track to graduation.

C1a. WGU Support – Program Mentor Describe one scenario in which you will turn to your Program Mentor for. Consider what you might be working on, what type of support you might be looking for, and how you might reach out for help.

C1b. WGU Support – Course Instructor Describe one scenario in which you will turn to your Course Instructor for support. Consider what you might be working on, what type of support you might be looking for, and how you might reach out for help. C2. Your determination to succeed early is important to build momentum toward your goals at WGU. Reflect on and identify at least two (2) actions or behaviors you will engage in to positively impact your first term.

My program mentor is skilled in my chosen degree. Whether it be to ask for extra details on a class or refreshing me on goals and tasks I have to complete in order to stay on track. For example, if I successfully complete all classes in a semester, I can request an appointment with her to speak about adding a class. Based on my competencies, she will be able to decide what is best for me at that time. When it comes to reaching out to my course instructor, they are skilled in the current course I am taking. If I am struggling on a certain topic even after studying, I have to schedule an appointment to speak with them. They would take the time to explain it to me and point me to other material I may have missed. In order to succeed my first term, it is crucial I lay out a solid study plan. Knowing my exact study hours will allow me to keep on track to completing my degree, while being able to keep a social life. When studying, it is crucial you don’t burn yourself out. Overdoing it can also lead to feeling overwhelmed and drained. Keeping a well-balanced social and school life are key to succeeding. Secondly, communication is a must. In order to complete my degree, I have to take advantage of all the help I am being offered. Whether I’m doubting myself or struggling to keep on task, there are many people willing to help me. Whether it is contacting my mentor and asking how to better balance my workload or reaching out to a course instructor for more information, it is crucial to stay on top of everything. There also many other resources such as the writing and math department when I need extra help or resources. When it comes to completing my work efficiently, I can always schedule an appointment with them as well.
