B. Intrapersonal Improvement The goal is to score a 10 in every category, scoring a 7 in both self-awareness and self-management showed that there is room to grow and improve in the interpersonal areas of emotional intelligence. According to mindtools.com and from Goleman’s research, self-awareness is knowing how you feel, knowing your emotions, and how your actions affect everyone around you. In leadership it goes a step further, knowing your strength and weaknesses and responding with humility (Mind Tools, 2020). Two ways to improve self-awareness are to keep a journal and slow down. Keeping a journal is something I have tried to do over the years and need to be more consistent with. “Slowing down” is another suggestion that I need to work on, it involves slowing down and processing why you are feeling the way you are feeling about something (Mind Tools, 2020). Per to mindtools.com and Goleman’s research, selfregulation or management is the ability to regulate how you respond or react to others. According to Goleman self-management is a “leader's flexibly and commitment to personal accountability” (Mind Tools, 2020, para. 14). Mindtools.com suggests 3 ways to improve self-management; know your values, hold yourself accountable, and practice being calm (Mind Tools, 2020). The last one, “Practice being calm” is one I need to practice. I show stress very easily and when I am presented with a challenge, I don’t keep a calm approach. Being okay with things that are out of my control is not a strength of mine. While I don’t typically lash out at others, I am someone who wears her stress emotions on her sleeve. I plan to practice being calm by taking a deep breath, taking a step back from the situation and focusing on the things that are in my control and doing my very best with those, and letting the ‘chips fall where they may with the things out of my control.

C. Interpersonal Improvement Scoring a 10 in both interpersonal areas was surprising for me. Even with scoring a 10, there is room for improvement and opportunities to grow. Social awareness and relationship management go hand in hand. There are many ways to improve the interpersonal side of emotional intelligence, but the two that resonated with me are, repeating what was said and looking for nonverbal cues. Repeating what was said and what you heard back from the other person is a great way to ensure that you are understanding what is being said. Repeating back to them allows them to clarify or to help you understand where they are coming from and their goal in communicating with you. Nonverbal cues can communicate more than words. Watching for facial expressions and body language can give the key to the other person's mind. Being mindful of the nonverbal cues of another can help you empathize and to ask more questions of them to help your understanding. The goal in interpersonal relationships should be understanding, and relationship with the other person. These two practices will help to strengthen my interpersonal skills of social awareness and relationship management (Sprimont, 2018).
