D079 RNM1 or BXM1 - Business Environment Applications II: Process, Logistics, and Operations – Task 2 - Logistics & Operations Management/Change Management

NOTE: Before submitting Task 2 - Insert Name, STUID, and Delete anything highlighted in Red Insert your answer below the actual task statement/assignment and keep the task statement in place . TEMPLATE FOR D079 (RNM1) or (BXM1) TASK 2 SUBMISSION Name: Makenna Stidham Student ID (STUID): 001368183 Task 2: Logistics & Operations/Change Management A. Discuss options and considerations for transporting the product described in the scenario to the retail facilities by doing the following: 1. (A1) Identify two different product packaging options and explain why you chose them. One packaging option would be using a mix of corrugated boxes and bubble wrap. The corrugated boxes are thicker than the average paperboard box and is made out of different layer that include both a liner and a medium. These boxes also come in multiple different sizes so you can ensure they would fit just right, with bubble wrap wrapped around the product. The bubble wrap would provide secondary cushion inside the corrugated box so the mandolins are not damaged inside the box when the box is being moved around. Another option would be to use a paperboard box, as long as the box is big enough to fit the mandolins and you ensure the product is carefully wrapped in bubble wrap or has packing peanuts. While this option is not as durable as the corrugated boxes, these boxes will still ensure the package is safe, as long as you add that layer of bubble wrap/packing peanuts.

2. (A2) Identify two different potential risks to consider when storing your product and describe how you will mitigate each risk. One potential risk while storing the mandolins are natural disasters, such as floods or fires. One way to mitigate this risk is to have safety protocols are in place and ensure they are followed, such as fire safety systems being installed. Another potential risk would be in the transportation stage. Whether it is when they are receiving the mandolins or they are shipping them out, this is a risk we must take. They can mitigate this risk by ensuring the mandolins are in proper packaging when being handled. 3. (A3) Describe two transportation modes to move your product from the manufacturer to the retail facilities. Then explain an advantage and a disadvantage of each chosen transportation mode. One transportation mode that could be used is truck transportation. This option is most likely to be used while shipping in the US. With this option, they could add another level of safety while packaging and have the items shipped with tertiary packaging. They would be able to easily transport multiple mandolins across the US in less trips. While this may be overall the best option, this option can also become expensive depending on the weight or bulkiness of the items being transported.

1

A secondary transportation mode that could be used is air transportation. This option is most likely to be used while shipping outside of the US. The mandolins would be packaged and loaded onto airplanes to be transported to their destination. This option may be much faster than sea transportation but can also become expensive, which could be considered a disadvantage. 4. (A4) Describe two different characteristics of the transportation management system (TMS) that will aid in transporting the product. One characteristic that will aid in transporting mandolins is the real time track and trace characteristic. With this, we will be able to track the products and anticipate events that may disrupt the supply chain such as bad weather and/or accidents. We will also be able to provide updates to retail facilities of when they should be receiving their items and if there will be any delay. Another characteristic that will aid in transporting mandolins is the reports and business intelligence characteristic. This characteristic should provide reporting tools such as charts and dashboards to visualize the patterns of shipping. This can provide rapid feedback of the vital data and analysis which can help understand the trends when shipping.

B. Discuss how you would address a barrier or bottleneck in transporting your product to the retail facilities by doing the following: 1. (B1) Describe how a barrier or bottleneck from the scenario can affect transporting the product. A barrier or bottleneck with this scenario would be when our company begins to receive low-quality raw materials from their supplier. Due to the low-quality materials, manufacturing times and delivery times to the retailer were both delayed. 2. (B2) Choose either the Lewin or ADKAR change management model and discuss how you would apply each step of the chosen model to address the barrier or bottleneck from part B1. In order to address the low-quality materials our current supplier provided; we could use the Lewin change management model. Using this model, our first step would be to unfreeze our mindset of using only this supplier and seeking out other suppliers who will be able to provide proper, high-quality materials. Once we find a supplier who will be able to provide the proper high quality hardwood materials, we would establish a supply change with them. Depending on the material, we may need to place a change management plan to ensure that all staff understand the reason and necessity for the change. Once this is completed, we would implement the change and refreeze the mindset and allow the changes to become the new standard process. 3. (B3) Discuss how you will address an ethical consideration for the barrier or bottleneck from part B1. The bottle neck caused retailers to be upset about not receiving their full orders from our company. Due to this, the ethical choice would be to dispose of the remaining low-quality materials and to not prepare any further items until we receive the proper high-quality 2

materials. Overall, the product safety and reputation are important and they must be considered when manufacturing these products.
