Video: Journey of Man QUESTIONS Questions:

1. Why were the early Europeans lightly-pigmented? (i.e. Whiter skinned than their African relatives? Ans: The element which plays key role in the coloration of skin is protein melanin. More the number of melanin in the skin the darker the colour of the skin. And the skin of European people was getting paler to absorb more sunlight because the temperature at the latitude 40s to 50s was and there was not enough sunlight. And the population at northern Europe were always covered with some clothes or sewn martials due to which they were not very much exposed to the sun But on the other hand, African relatives were darker than the European as, they lived in the equatorial hot environment so, skin must have been sweating more enough to keep their body cool. Furthermore, their body used to remain almost naked due to which they were in direct contact with the sunlight which makes them darker.

2. Why does Spencer Wells say that “If Africa is the cradle of mankind, then Central Asia is its nursery”? Ans: In the isolated land of Kyrgyzstan he collected the blood samples of about 2000 people. That was when they discovered that their blood held remarkable secret: an ancient marker. And he found out that almost every man in Western Europe was carrying it, from Norway to Spain, Ireland to Austria so the European ancient people wouldn’t have taken the direct route from Africa via Middle East but have passed through Central Asia about 40,000 years ago. The discovery of Central Asian marker has changed the understanding of the journey, made by the first Europeans. The further research also showed that the marks of these ancient man was spread from Europe through Asia, Russia, North and South America.

3. Near the end of the video wells says, “We can all trace our ancestry back to those few people that left Africa 50,000 years ago.” What does Wells say about lessons about relationships and old-fashioned concepts of ‘race’:

Lessons about relationships: one lesson about relationship i.e. everyone all over world, are African under the skin, brothers and sisters separated by a mere of 2000 generations.

Old-fashioned concepts of Race: It is believed that old fashioned concepts are not fully isolated but somewhat scientifically wrong. Its only when we fully take this on board that we can say with any judgement that the journey our ancestors launched all those years ago is complete....
