Critical Analysis on the story Biag ni Lam-Ang...

Description

Introduction The epic, "Biag Ni Lam-ang" by Pedro Bukaneg was passed on orally for ages before it was recorded around 1640. This epic is wonderful story of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of the Philippines, it tells the bravery of lam-ang and his immortality ability. Pedro Bukaneg was a Filipino writer – dazzle since birth, he is the recognized creator of the Ilocano epic Biag ni Lam-ang, Lam-ang is an extraordinary being, manifesting when he begins to speak in his early years, thus enabling him to choose his own name. The epic Biag ni Lam-ang tells us the life of lam-ang, it can be shown here in the epic how much the Ilocanos show elegance just to get the woman they want to marry, how much they value their family, what the culture, religion and beliefs of the igorot. Biag ni Lam-ang epic tells us about Lam-ang's life, Lam-ang's life is impressive, Lam-ang is not selfish and he really loves his family very much, it was proven when he searched for his father without fear. His bravery was shown to the townspeople of Calanutian and Nalbuan when he took shellfish, the fact that it was a difficult task as many tried to try to catch the precious shellfish but they failed. Summary The epic is about Lam-ang’s life from avenging his father's murder, when he wins the hand of the one he wants to marry, to being eaten by the water monster Berkakan, to being resurrection and living happily with his love, Ines Kannoyan. The setting is Nalbuan- somewhere in the Valley of Naguilan River in La Union where Lam-ang and his parents lived. The main character is Lam-ang, he is the only son of Namongan and Don Juan Panganiban and he had the unusual power of speech and physical form. The theme is lam-ang’s bravery and courage. The author argues that when lam-ang's father left for the mountain to fight the enemy Igorot and Lam-ang's father disappeared so he looked for his father. Lamang dreams that enemies attacked his father and cut off his father's head, he rushed to the village where the enemies live and killed every single one of them, one-handed. The research was when Lam-ang been chosen to dive for the shellfish called rarang and he knew he could die based on his dream so he gave his wife a sign when it happens – the signs happened and Lam-ang died, but because of his promise and immortal ability, he was resurrected, Lam-ang and Ines Cannoyan reunited peacefully. The main points are the truly brave have no fear even in death, the truly courageous can protect others and take revenge if possible, and the truly caring are blessed like what happened to Lam-ang. The authors conclude that being brave is not seen in outward appearance but how strong your will is. Analysis What I liked about this epic was when Lam-ang was born, he was able to speak immediately. When he sought out his father and when he found out who had killed his father, he also killed them without fear and streak of doubt. When he got the hand of the one he wanted to marry and they got married. The latter was when he died and resurrect so Lam-ang and Ines Cannoyon lived happily ever after. However, what I didn't like about this epic was when Lam-ang's father died because of the Igorots so Lam-ang didn't have the experience of having a father. When he was chosen to dive for shellfish and he knew he would be damned but he still did it, he risked his life. In this story Lam-ang's courage and ability can be shown. If you are to take revenge you must have courage and no fear, as Lam-ang did when he took revenge for his father. To win a woman's heart, you don't have to be handsome and rich – just be brave, smart and enthusiastic so you can make fall in love with you the woman you desired. Lam-ang got the woman he wanted because he was strategic. I can say that the intended goal of author is achieved. From its moral lesson that life is full of trials and problems; one must be strong and must accept this reality. Lam-ang is a great person because he

has a supernatural power that he used to help other people around him. He does anything just to win the heart of the woman he loves. This epic also dominated by action and tragedy, nonetheless contained some comedic points. I will say that this analysis is well researched from what I've read in the text and in social media that Biag ni Lam-ang is an epic story of the Ilocano people from the Ilocos region of the Philippines. It is notable for being the first Philippine folk epic to be recorded in written form, and was one of only two folk epics documented during the Philippines' Spanish Colonial period. The appropriate conclusion is the bravery and courage portrayed by Lam-ang. It also shows how loving Lam-ang is, his family and his beloved wife. Conclusion You should read this epic because this epic tells the life of Lam-ang, how zealous Ilocanos are when they courting with the woman they want. How important family is. What the cultures, religions and beliefs of the Igorot are can be shown here in the epic. The epic also says that Lam-ang's life is impressive. He was born with a different ability. He is caring and unselfish. Lam-ang is very brave and there is nothing to fear because of his immortal ability....
