Description

How language is developed and acquired in childhood

Language development through socialization and social engagement

Language is the first and foremost instrument for communication. Language development (or acquisition) is the process of how a person gains the knowledge of a language. “Language acquisition is the process by which speakers come to have knowledge of a language.” (Cambridge Encyclopedia of Child Development, 2017).

Through language socialization, children learn the behaviors that are culturally appropriate in their communities. Developing an understanding of how children are being socialized and socially engaged are increasingly important. Children need to learn how to verbally express themselves. Through socialization and social engagement, children learn how to communicate, express themselves, have independent thoughts, and rationalization. Learning from one another is a part of development, we all need.

There are two theories that explore how children develop their language skills. The idea that “many important aspects of language are not learned at all, but instead are hard-wired into the genome, and therefore present from birth.” (Ambridge, 2017). The opposite view known as the constructivist approach believe that children “are not equipped with the innate knowledge, but instead construct their knowledge on the basis of the language that they hear from their parents and other adults.” (Ambridge, 2017). Educators are inclined to teach with the perspective of the constructivist theory. Children do tend to model language and behaviors after their parents.

Language Development Birth to Pre-K

Role of The Parent/Guardian in Modeling and Reinforcing Language You, play a large part in how a child’s language develops. After birth, babies hear and recognize your voice. Family and peers can have a positive or negative influence which can hinder the language development. When a parent or family member is talking or reading to a child, one should always model correctly because the child will mimic everything they hear or see. Some activities a parent can do is reading with proper pronunciation of the words and expressions. Take your child for a walk and sing songs or even play dress-up and go on an adventure.

Language Acquisition Theories

English As a First Language Many theories have developed through the years on how people should be learning their own language or languages. There are four theorists with different points of view. Chomsky’s nativist theory believed that all children acquire language in the same way. “Seems to indicate that we’re born wired with the basics already present in our brains.” (Stanborough, R., MFA, 2017). Skinner’s behaviorism theory believes that children will learn their language through word association to an action. A positive reinforcement, strengthened by reward leading to repletion of behavior. “Functionalism theory approaches to study language that is concerned with the functions performed by language, primarily in terms of cognition (relating information), expression (indicating mood), and conation (exerting influence)”. (The Editors of Encyclopedia Britannica, 1998). According to Vygotsky, Sociocultural theory suggest the interaction between people and their culture in which they live. Also, that human learning is largely a social process. The theory I would emphasis to support students’ language acquisition in my classroom is Sociocultural and Functionalism. I believe students’ need not only to be able to connect language in the cognitive form but also through expression. Students’ need to be able to socialize with others. That is how they build language, self-expression, and relationships.

Students’ are supported in the classroom with specific instructions and strategies such as keeping it simple yet informative and fun. Giving the students what they need to learn at a particular age.

English As a Second Language ELL learners find difficulty translating from their native language into English. Just as English-speaking children have a hard time with another language. When students are asked to complete a task, I use picture cards with words printed on. Also, implementing small group work which allows them to practice language skills with their peers.

Language Development Activities Stanborough, R., MFA. (2019). Born This Way:

Language Development is essential. If a child can speak, they can learn. Some fun and engaging activities could be playing the “Name that Object”, sing songs, toys and puppet games, and even create an obstacle course they have to go through and perform what the picture or word says. Even just talking to them in a conversation about anything will engage a child’s language development.
