Topic Proposal Memo

1. My topic for the Topic Proposal talk is how blockchain technology can help improve security of cryptocurrency. 2. Over the past 3-4 years the number of cryptocurrencies at the disposal of the public has grown exponentially. It is becoming more and more important for people to have the reassurance that their money is safe. According to an article published by finance expert Raynor de Best, the number of blockchain users has nearly doubled since May of 2019 (Best). This quick jump in crypto investors is a sign that the world is moving away from the use of physical currency and into the use of digital. For this reason, it is important there is a sound way of keeping large amounts of cryptocurrency safe without having to worry about the chance of fraud. 3. Because of the increase in need for a safe means of transaction in this current digital landscape, blockchain can help provide that. Blockchain provides a “decentralized system for recording and documenting transactions” (Reiff). This is essential for investors to keep their large quantities of cryptocurrency safe as blockchain serves as a very transparent transaction ledger. 4. The technology behind this problem/solution combo is cybersecurity. In today’s everchanging digital landscape, it is increasingly important to make sure that transactions and ledger systems are as transparent as ever to prevent fraud. Blockchain can provide a technical solution to this problem. 5. My audience most likely has very minimal knowledge when it comes to this issue. They most likely have a slight understanding to what BitCoin is, but nothing beyond the technical aspects of it. It will be my job to explain to them the problem to a satisfying depth so they can understand the solution better as well. 6. Similar to the problem, the audience probably has very little understanding of what the solution, blockchain transactions, is. Perhaps there is computer science majors apart of the audience that will have a baseline understanding, but nothing too deep in depth. Like defining the problem to them, I will have to do a good job providing a good description of the solution. 7. At the beginning of my presentation I plan on providing the audience with a statistic illustrating the dramatic rise in use of cryptocurrency. After that I will be stressing the need to keep the money safe, showing that blockchain is the answer to that problem.

8. According to Nathan Reiff of Investopedia, anonymous founder of BitCoin Satoshi Nakamoto is responsible for the creation of blockchain (Reiff). Currently, companies like IBM and other financial giants are developing their own version of blockchain technology. 9. When deciding on how to create a satisfying depth in my speech, I will need to realize the audiences understanding of blockchain technology and cryptocurrency. Certainly, I will not be able to go into extreme depth on the technical side of things but rather focus on the big picture points of understanding to provide a satisfying depth. 10. During the topic proposal talk and the full problem solution talk itself, it will be important that I do not bore my audience with information about the technical side of the issue. I will have to convey to them how this technology is helpful not only to crypto user but possibly themselves in the future. Keeping my presentation centered on the facts and overarching benefits of the solution in the 8-10 minutes that I have will assure that I achieve a satisfying depth. 11. Some limitations in the problem include interest in cryptocurrency itself. Not everyone is certainly interested in investing money into a newfound financial technology, so I will have to convey to them how it will certainly become more prevalent in their lives in the future. 12. Like the problem, I might be limited in the solution side of the presentation because of the fact that people might not have a interest let alone understanding of blockchain technology. It will be necessary for me to provide a memorable understanding of the solution to give a sound presentation. 13.
