EDUCATION UP College of Medicine (original campus of the University of the Philippines) in Manila (1926–1933, medical degree). Boston University School of Medicine (Master of Science in Bacteriology, 1940). Harvard Medical School's Children's Hospital (1939–1941, two-year research fellowship).

PUBLISHED WORKS Textbook of Pediatrics and Child Health (1982), she also authored more than 100 articles, reviews, and reports published in medical journals.

AWARDS AND HONORS   

National Scientist of the Philippines, Elizabeth Blackwell Award for Outstanding Service to Mankind (1966). Ramon Magsaysay Award for Outstanding Public Service (1977). Named Outstanding Pediatrician and Humanitarian by the International Pediatric Association (1977).

THE LEGACY       

First woman pediatrician to be admitted to Harvard Medical School in 1936. First woman to be named National Scientist of the Philippines in 1980. Founded the first pediatric hospital in the Philippines, then Children Medical Center, and now Fe Del Mundo Medical Center. Credited with studies that lead to the invention of the first incubator and jaundicerelieving device. Received the Elizabeth Blackwell Award as a “Woman Doctor of World Renown”. Received the Ramon Magsaysay Award for “Outstanding Public Service”. Received the 15th International Congress of Pediatrics Award as the “Most Outstanding Pediatrician and Humanitarian” in 1977.

PROFESSION Dr. Fe del Mundo pioneered numerous innovations throughout her more than 70-year medical career. A committed humanitarian, del Mundo dedicated her life to the health of the world’s children. CONTRIBUTIONS Del Mundo revolutionized Philippine medicine, making major breakthroughs in immunization and in the treatment of jaundice, and providing healthcare to thousands of poor families. She is credited with studies that led to the invention of the incubator and a jaundice relieving device. Her methods, like the BRAT diet for curing diarrhea, have spread throughout the world and saved millions.

I chose Dr. Fe del Mundo because of her greatest contribution in medical field. Her invention, the first incubator, contributed many benefits for human especially for new born babies to maintain its safety, health, and condition. She also brought medical care to rural Filipino families with no health care, saving children dying from dehydration and establishing family planning clinic. Dr. Del Mundo also established the Institute of Maternal and Child Health, which trains doctors and nurses....
