a. Brief Overview of Course This course introduces students to the study of Psychology from the Biological, Social and Human development perspective and provides a broad base knowledge of the discipline. The course content will cover areas/topics such as Definitions, Basic Concepts and History of psychology, Psychobiological and Social bases of behaviour. The course will explain the basics of Motivation and Emotions, Sensation and Perception, Learning and Human Development, Personality and Forensic/legal Psychology. b. Course Objectives / Goals To introduce the students to the foundation of the major aspects of psychology during the first and second semester. c. Learning Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course, the student would have demonstrated the ability to: 1. Differentiate between scientific and non-scientific information about human behaviour and mental processes. 2. Describe major developments and research methods used in psychology. 3. Explain psychological processes involved in sensation, perception, learning, memory, motivation, emotion, states of consciousness and health. 4. Analyze the variety of factors affecting sensation, perception, consciousness, learning, memory, motivation, emotion, and health. 5. Apply psychological concepts and principles to situations in everyday life. d. Method of Lecture Delivery Lectures will be delivered through class discussion, lectures, videos and power point presentation.

Contemporary Issues / Industry Relevance: Psychology is very relevant to virtually all disciplines. It is a course that will be beneficial to those in Business Management, the Social Sciences, Human Developers and some Science Disciplines such as Medicine and Environmental Sciences. Consequently, if students find themselves working in industrial settings, they should be able to cope.
