ZERO TO ONE by Peter Thiel with Blake Masters- 2bp

The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary

entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things. The core lesson is that the best and most disruptive companies go from 0 to 1. There are two types of innovations: take something that exists and improve it and we go from 1 to n, called horizontal progress; create something new and go from “0 to 1” using vertical progress. To have a lasting impact, you must find a zero and create a new paradigm.

Vertical progress is what it takes to go from zero to one and create the technology or idea in the first place. STARTUPS He also argues against the old “lean startup” dogmas: 1. Make incremental advances  It is better to risk boldness than triviality. 2. Stay lean and flexible  A bad plan is better than no plan. 3. Improve on the competition Competitive markets destroy profits. 4. Focus on product, not sales Sales matters just as much as product.

MONOPOLIES

All happy companies are different: each one earns a monopoly by solving a unique problem. All failed companies are the same: they failed to escape competition. Monopolies have a powerful incentive to innovate and the profits that they have built up over time that acts as a powerful driver. They can continue to innovate with research and projects that start-ups can only dream of. BUILDING SOMETHING THAT LASTS 1. Proprietary technology: it’s hard or impossible to replicate your product (f. e. Google’s search algorithms) 2. Effect of network: The more people use it, the more useful it is. (f. e. Facebook) 3. Economies of scale: a business gets stronger as it gets bigger. (f. e. Software startups) 4. Branding: creating a strong and powerful brand is the best way to grow a monopoly (f. e. Apple) In general, I think everyone in SOLID needs to read this book as it’s one of the essentials if you’re an entrepreneur, and I can agree on that myself. SOLID’s projects all come from our passions, but none of them have been created from 0 to 1, they all started at 1. Thinking on SOLID’s future or ours as individual entrepreneurs, we should start thinking on our future company we want to work on....
