Description

Vygotsky – Scaffolding theory Scaffolding – progressing in small steps to achieve a larger goal, instead of going straight for the larger goal and expecting it to work straight away. Example: The end goal is for the child to answer 10x10 correctly. At this point in time, they have never done counting before. First step of scaffolding in this case would be counting to 10, then 20, then 50, then 100. Then, you would have to start teaching basic multiplication such as the 2- and 5-times table, then 10 times table. After scaffolding all of these steps, the child should be able to answer 10x10 correctly. This method would stop children from feeling too overwhelmed/confused as the next step in their learning will not be too far away (only learning the next 10 numbers rather than learning the 10-times table when they have never done counting before). Criticisms of Vygotsky’s scaffolding theory: It will take much longer to teach the child. It would be a lot quicker to just teach the child their 10-times table from the offset, but the child will most likely not have the understanding and background to fully comprehend what the 10-times table actually means. Using scaffolding means that the child being taught will fully understand what is being taught to them, and all of the steps needed to reach the end point....
