Katherine Carcamo Professor Caton-David ENC 1143 February 19, 2018 “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” Summary In the short story “We Can Remember It For You Wholesale”, American writer Phillip K Dick takes his readers on an adventure when a patient purchases a memory implant that creates false memories. Initially, the setting takes place in Rekal Incorporated which is located in Chicago, Illinois. The main character Douglas Quail, is a government employee until he feels that he’d been the Mars after waking up one morning. At Rekal Incorporated, he finds out that he encountered aliens and assassinated them. He feels special since the false memory has saved everyone from an alien invasion. To an intended audience of science fiction readers, the author uses supernatural characteristic to make it more amusing. The author shows tropes by classifying the Earth as the “Terra”. This allow his readers to further understand what he’s referencing to in the story. Furthermore, the story is told in omniscient point of view by using pronouns like “he” and “his”. Additionally, irony is presented when everything Douglas knew as real, resulted to be false that created as real life in his brain by the Interplan Agency. According to the text, “What you did is not in accord with our great white all protecting father public image. You did for us, what we never do” (Dick 110). It means that when Rekal Incorporated wanted Douglas to remember his dreams, he reminds himself the truth. Overall, the message conveys that the human mind is mysterious and that technology can affect the brain in many ways.
