Tutorial Questions 1. Define the term business information system and explain its importance in Global Business A business information system is the applications/web servers that a business uses in order to help with the service they provide. In global business, it means that everyone can access their system wherever they are.

2. What is an information system? Information system, an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for providing information, knowledge, and digital products.

3. Discuss how the relationship between an organization and information system. An organization and their information system will share the same goals. As a business wants to sell products, spread awareness; whatever their goal, they would want to tailor their information system to meet their target.

4. Discuss the main classification of BIS. Support your answer with relevant examples and a diagram. A functional perspective – Identifying systems by their major business function. A constituency perspective – Identifying systems by their purpose (Operations Information System)/ Management

5. What are Transaction Processing Systems and Decision Support Systems? A transaction processing system is used to speed up and automate the transaction process of a business, whereas a Decision Support System is designed to help make decisions in a business, this could include presenting data to the senior employees to see the productivity rate of the specific employees.

6. What do these systems (TPS and DSS) make possible for customers? In terms of TPS, it will help with the customer to create a buy order, and obtain the product or service that the business supplies.

Practical session 2 - Practical class for Week 2 Practical session – Week 2: Exercises to be done in Computer lab; Installation of MS office suite for application software 1. Go to MS outlook 365 use the https://outlook.office.com/

2. In the screen shot above select Office 365  Then use the dropdown menu to install the office suite (including Excel)

3. Follow the screen shot below to install Excel spreadsheet from Office 365  Download the excel and PowerPoint application from Office 365 and install it on your PC.

4. To download and install other applications for this module Go to CN5003 Teams folder and download the needed applications from the files folder.

Weeks 2 Pr Practical actical T Task ask Exercise 1:1. Creating Business Information Systems for John Smith Shop: Task 1a  Use the Excel spreadsheet attached as a sample to create a complete your spreadsheet for the John Smith Shop; Task 1b  Complete the Excel spreadsheet in Task 1a by calculating the Total Sales for each product in the spreadsheet.  The calculation must be done using the formulae approach in Excel. Task 1c  Use the completed Excel spreadsheet from Task 1b to create the following information systems for John Smith: 1. Structure - (TPS or DSS) 2. Semi-structured - MIRS 3. Unstructured information - EIS 

The above information systems can be used for decision making at different management levels in any company.

Connection of Front End to Excel using the paste special procedure update Perform the following Tasks

1. Using the special paste in MS Excel 2013, link the Excel structured information spreadsheet you created last week to MS Word document as a Front End. 2. Create semi-structured and unstructured information for the structured information in task 1 above and link them onto the MS Word document using Paste Special. 3. Modify some of the data in the Structured Information System 4. Check how it affects the semi-structured and unstructured information in Task 2. Guidelines for using Paste Special: A) In Excel, first copy the data in the excel spreadsheet then use the Paste Special command on the Edit menu to paste the specific cell contents from the Clipboard into an Excel worksheet. B) You can also use the Paste Special command to create a link from excel spreadsheet to another program such as Microsoft word. This is done by using the paste link (i.e. OLE LINK). Using the Special Paste to link excel spreadsheet to another spreadsheet or program. Procedure Steps 1. Select the data you want to copy 2. Then click Copy or press CTRL + C 3. On the Edit menu, click Paste Special a. Under Paste, you can select “All or All accept borders”. b. Also you can view and select other attribute options and their functions, such as Add, subtract, multiple and divide etc. c. To avoid replacing values in your paste area when blank cells occur in the copy area, select Skip blanks. d. To change columns of copied data to rows, or vice versa, select Transpose.

Using Paste Special and Paste Link to link files; To create link between Word Front End and Excel Back End use the procedure below: 1. Click Paste Link; to link the pasted data in spreadsheet or another program to the original data, 2. Paste Link will give you a window that allows you to create OLE LINK by selecting. 2.1 Paste Link 2.2 Microsoft Office Excel 2013 (see figure 2 below) 3. Then click OK

Special Task  

Modify some the data in the Excel spreadsheet at the Back End and see how it affects the graph. Then observe how the graph changes accordingly.

Using Paste Special and Paste Link to link files in Excel 2010 The procedure for linking in Excel 2013 is the same as in Excel 2010 except the following. 1. In Excel 2007, first copy the data in the excel spreadsheet then use the Paste Special command, which is under Home (see figure 4 below) 2. Click on the drop-down menu under Paste (Clipboard) and select Paste Special

The rest of the procedures for linking programs to Excel spreadsheet in Excel 2013 are the same as in Excel 2010.
