Description

When I initially planned to Study at the QUT Law School my expectations were a heavy workload, mountains of reading and taking public transport daily. However only two of these expectations have been met; I have only been into the city on an as required basis. Sufficed to say studying law at the QUT Law School has left me with mixed feelings. Obviously with the restrictions in place studying at Gardens Point is not viable. I personally would have loved to catch public transport into the city; it is a fantastic place to let my mind wander. Public transport gives access to an excuse to experience cheap lunches with friends in Brisbane’s CBD, meet after class and catch a drink or hang out at the arcade. But more importantly the train into the city would have been the train into education in person. Personally, I prefer to learn in person; frantically writing down notes, understand them and then reading them again. However, at home I find it hard to stay motivated to stay on task and go over my notes, although, I do enjoy the leisure of working from home. Ordinarily the workload of full time University is going to be massive, I expected that from the moment I submitted my details to QTAC; Law School has been no exception. I find myself studying more than I did in high school and I hated studying it always felt like some sort of chore, akin to a fruitless labour. Law School is not the same, I cannot explain why exactly but I enjoy it more than studying any subjects in high school (except music). I find myself more motivated to learn law then even my favourite subjects whilst in high school maybe it is due to my end goal being further in sight. So, although the workload is debatably more arduous than high school it is what I wanted and fully expected going into Law School. I look forward to the 4 years of study ahead of me. Though not an initial expectation of mine, many people I had talked to before choosing a Bachelor of Law had told me that studying law had involved a lot of reading. Those people were not wrong, it is not only reading textbooks its reading court cases, acts and navigating websites where I will find such. Law School reading has kept me busy. To conclude QUT Law School has met certain expectations of mine. Especially regarding workload, reading but has lacked the social expectations that studying at University would entail. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to studying law for the forthcoming years.
