FDENG 301-19, Winter 2019 Article Analysis When I Moved Online…& Mind Over Mass Media Main Point The main point of the article “When I Moved Online” written by Tao Lin is that, the virtual world found within the internet disconnects human from real face to face interaction. People that don’t understand the internet like the older generation of people start to believe that those sitting on their devices are doing merely nothing. In contrast, Tao believes this is due to the fact that that generation of people just don’t understand it. In contrast, Steven Pinker writes the article “Mind Over Mass Media” where his main point reveals that electronic media can instead have a positive effect on learning. Pinker claims that the internet doesn’t change a person’s brain just by watching or listening to something. It is up to us to not blame things like Google and Twitter and instead have self-control with it. Better Evidence The better evidence found between these two articles is in Steven Pinker’s article, “Mind Over Mass Media”. Unlike Lin who only uses evidence from his personal experiences, Pinker uses factual evidence to back up his beliefs. For instance, he refers to the advancement of science by saying, “If electronic media were hazardous to intelligence, the quality of science would be plummeting. Yet discoveries are multiplying like fruit flies, and progress is dizzying.” Pinker has gathered evidence in many different aspects where negative thoughts about the internet were proven false and this helps his claim immensely. Persuasiveness Ultimately, Steven Pinker had a more persuasive article due to the amount of evidence he shares and is able to back up his statements with. He was able to prove that it is primarily up to each person individually to choose whether or not they let the internet take over there lives and allow it influence their decisions....
