Social media & news

Forms of communication designed to reach and influence large audiences Niche media: Forms of communication geared to a narrowly defined audience.

2/3 americans get their news on social media

Consolidation of news media ownership by major corporations - In 1980s, 50 corporate owners, by 2014 there were only 6. Proliferation of news sources – but what about accuracy and reliability? Focus on sensational events rather than in-depth analyses of ongoing events or issues (exception is sources that don’t depend on advertising revenue) May be biased (in words and/or images)

    News media and science  

News coverage of scientific research may contain inaccuracies, misleading statements, or hyperbole. News coverage may reflect the biases of the governemtn (e.g., downplaying the effects of agent orange) As with all news, claims should be evaluated critically, including reviews by other experts in the field. - Example: retraction of Lacour’s study at UCLA, published in science.

Media Literacy: The ability to understand and critically analyze the influence of mass media

Framing generally understood as the ways in which meaning is imposed on a particular event, issue, or situation (different than agenda setting or priming in the media) Frames can be coaxed, flattered, affronted, and threatened… motive and intent are involved, and their imputation helps select which of the carious frameworks of understanding is applied. And that ambiguities in events/situations are resolved with framing because they not only address, “what could be going on, but also which one of two or more clearly posslible things is going on. Not about what is said as much as how it said.

Media literacy
