Description

Briefly, share a time when you set a goal and did not accomplish it, and then share a time when you set a goal and successfully achieved it. Why weren’t you successful in your first example? Why were you successful in your second example? ● An example I would give when I was unsuccessful in achieving my goal was when I wanted to improve my golf handicap from 24 to 20 over the year. An example I would give when I was successful in achieving my goal was when I wrote £5 million of new bank debt during the year for my previous employer. ● The reason why I would consider that I was unsuccessful in achieving my goal of reducing my handicap was due to planning, motivation, focus, time management, lack of practice and attitude. Like most sports, it’s about practice however one needs to be able to plan and allocate enough time to practice, have the right attitude and the motivation to put in the hours of practice at the driving range and/or on the course to see the stage by stage improvement. Unfortunately, I wasn’t focused on the task at hand which leads to me losing interest and procrastinating. ● The reasons why I was successful in achieving the £5m of new debt during the year was because I clearly mapped out my plan at the start of the year, this meant that I divided the amount/goal into manageable monthly targets which made the amount seem more realistic & achievable and lastly I was motivated by the fact that by achieving my goal there would be a financial reward at the end of the year. Why does effective goal-setting help us achieve goals? What are the characteristics of good goals? ● ‘A goal is a result we intend to reach mostly through our own actions’ (College Success, 2015). By setting effective goals, goals become specific and clearly defined. Specific goals are more effective in improving performance than are general goals or no goals at all and an effective goal indicates what you need to do to achieve it. This

also means that effective goal-setting should be measurable so that you must be able to measure the performance that relates to the specific goal. Effective goal setting make goals realistic and produce better performance than moderate or easy goals. The higher the goal, the higher the performance, as long as the goal does not exceed what we are capable of doing and as such goals should not be so difficult you lose motivation and ultimately fail. ● The characteristics of good goal-setting are: goals should be realistic and at the same time challenging, goals should be specific and defined, goals should have a defined time frame, goals should be measurable, goals should be attainable, goals should be prioritized, one should develop strategies to meet your goals. Based on your answer to questions 1 and 2, set three goals: one short-term, one midterm, and one long-term. 1. Short-term: Look to buy or make an offer on a new house within the next 8 weeks so that we can provide stability for the kids. 2. Medium-term: Look to help the girls settle in their new schools over the next 12 months following our move from the United Kingdom to South Africa. 3. Long-term: Complete my undergraduate degree from the UoPeople within the next 24 months after starting my first term in September 2019. References: College Success. (2015).
