Summary

An essay on No Sugar...

Description

Connection the the context of ‘No Sugar’ / Audience and Purpose For my creative response, called ‘The Freedom Rides’, for Jack Davis’ play No Sugar I wrote further about the reincarnation of Jimmy and how his legacy will continue through the protagonist Jimmy Millumara. The world in No Sugar will be the same for my creative response but years into the future. I intended to expand on Davis’ theme of Indeginous identity and poverty. Unlike in No Sugar, the lack of indeginous identity in the protagonist is shown by not showing Jimmy’s family and making him more assimilated into white culture. But this isn’t for long since part of the purpose for this short story is to reconnect Jimmy with his culture and show his colleagues the stereotypes and misconceptions they have about indigenous Australians is wrong. I established the historical context when researching the freedom rides from which I learnt about the first destination, Wellington, the culture and language of that place. Charles Perkins, the only aboriginal on the bus is shown through Jimmy Millimurra in my story. From Charles Perkins’ diary I reference how they describe the poverty of Wellington.

Form / Structure In my creative response, I chose to write a short story based on Jack Davis’ No Sugar through the eyes of Henry. While writing, to make sure it sounds like a short story and is first perspective I stay consistent with what is meant to be known by the reader. The climax in my story occurs when the riders’ bus is trashed. It is later resolved with the help of aboriginals who gave them their truck.

Voice / Language The language used by the leader and Charlie early on is discriminatory towards aboriginal. Later on I added irony to their dialogue to ridicule their logic. For the dialogue of the Aboriginal and their culture I researched what area the first destination is, its culture and the language of it.
