Description

The Organization Against Child Labor (OACL) Presents: Child Labor in the Late 1800s and Early 1900s Child labor is a very serious issue that is taking over the world. Children as young as five years old are being forced to leave their schooling and do manual labor in poor condition, for very low wages. This due to population increases making good paying jobs harder and harder to obtain. So, in some family's situations, everyone in the household must work just to be able to afford basic necessities. This severely impacts the children not only because they are being forced to work in places that most of the time have horrible working conditions, long hours, and have very low wages, but also because of the effects those things have on the children. Working in factories especially is very dangerous because there are no codes that buildings must follow, so the children can be exposed to potentially life threatening or harmful chemicals, situations, etc. And along with that, the long hours of constant repetitious work for most all day, hurts the child mentally and physically. This is because children typically need 9-12 hours of sleep in order for their brain and body to grow and function properly. And with the hours that the children must work with, that typically range from 12-19 hours a day, they are unable to get the sleep that they need to grow and function. Child labor also impacts their future. This is also because the long work hours means that they are unable to go to school and learn tools they will need later in life in order to have a good paying job.

What the OCAL Demands! • • • • • •

Better working conditions for children Less mandatory hours so they can still attend school and sleep Better wages Minimum age requirement of 13 Building codes Laws that state that enforce all changes

For our children to have good futures, be safe, and healthy, they need these things. The most important thing we accomplish is fixing hours, building codes, and minimum age requirement as well as having laws to back all of them. We are willing to negotiate minimum age requirement as well as the hours based off age such as increasing the number of hours allowed after the children hits certain ages. We are also willing to negotiate how much you pay based off how laboring the job is and how many hours it takes. But besides that, we demand to better these conditions for our children.

When will the OACL Meetings be? We plan to host meetings every Monday at 10:00 A.M. at the towns townhall center, to further discuss how to accomplish these goals. We may decide to create more meetings, events, organized protests, etc. as we go, and will update on flyers. You are not required to go to every meeting or other various activity, but it is appreciated. Anyone devoted to the cause can join and we do not charge a fee to do so.
